Note: This guide is for use with regular PSP units only, the following steps are not to be performed on a PSP Slim.
Want to go back to a previous OE revision or have decided that custom firmware is not for you? Here is how to downgrade your new custom firmware installation in five easy steps.
Recovery ZIP for Custom Firmware 2.71 - 3.52 (http://forums.exophase.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=75&d=1174070787)
Recovery ZIP for Custom Firmware 3.71 (http://forums.exophase.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3742&stc=1&d=1193276795)
It's important that you download the recovery ZIP corresponding to your firmware version.
Extract the Recovery ZIP.
Place the "RECOVERY" or "UPDATE" folder in X:/PSP/GAME/
Download the 1.5 Update (http://exophase.com/files/psp/150.PBP), save as file name "UPDATE.PBP"
Move "UPDATE.PBP" into the same folder you placed on your memory stick in Step 1.
If you are running custom firmware 2.71 - 3.52
Everything is setup! Hold R while turning on your PSP to enter recovery mode, and choose the option which reads "Run program at.." to begin downgrading to firmware 1.5.
If you are running custom firmware 3.71
Navigate to the Game menu and launch "Update to X.Y.Z." You may be asked to patch your idstorage keys, if so, press X.

You can also just run a different oe update and it will work fine. You can't run the 1.50 update though.

Ok, I have always used the method presented in the first post, but one of my friends (he had 3.03 OE) simply created a folder RECOVERY in PSP/GAME and put 1.50 update (named as EBOOT.PBP) and run the recovery from the recovery mod, and it worked. I am totally confused?! How the hell is that possible?
btw when PSP booted in 1.50 it just said "Contact sony computer entertainment technical support line for assistance", and simply entered XMB.
Now my question is, how is that on earth possible to do without the files provided in Flasher for recovery folder?

well it might be possible on 3.03 OE (can't remember) but it definitely doesn't work on any recent OE revisions.
anyways the recovery folder is a better solution since people who are recovering from bad XMB or font flashes wouldn't be able to run the Sony updater as it loads vsh modules.

One thing more, does it mean that people have already tried to downgrade OE to 1.50 without standarad procedure? (because i saw it first and only time when my friend did it, I'm just interested did somebody suceed too)

Hi,
These instructions are for downgrading from an OE firmware not an official sony firmware.
If you are on 3.01 then you will need to follow the guide in this thread. (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=525)
But in order for you to do this, you will firstly need to upgrade to sony official 3.03 (http://files.exophase.com/psp/EBOOT_303.zip), and have an unpatched copy of "Grand Theft Auto - Liberty City Stories".

Hey,yesterday I downgraded my friend's PSP from 3.50 to 1.50 and then upgraded to 3.40 OE-A,and now he say he can't play any UMD games,he got the messege:The game cannot be started. So he tell me to get back the way it was before,so I guess I have to downgrade and then install 3.50 on his PSP again. But will it brick?
His PSP
3.50>>1.50>>3.40 OE-A
Will it brick if he downgrade to 1.50 and then upgrade to sony's again?
I heard someone said that if you downgraded to 1.50,you cannot upgrade to sony officials again.
Is it true? Will it brick?Someone please tell me!!!!!!!!

i dunno if other people have this problem. after downgrading to 1.5 and the blue screen of death, it reboots itself. but if you have a UMD inside, it auto starts the UMD, just skipping the xmb. and OMG it auto updates to the firmware you have from the UMD (in my case it's a 2.71[whew] scarface.) then i have to downgrade back again to 1.5, wasting a HELL lot of time.

Actually there is now, there is two ways, you can either update to 3.50 (NOT NOT NOT!!! 3.51 OR 3.52, or you can't use this one) and use the 3.50 downgrader which uses the Lumines UMD, you can find a guide to do that HERE (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=2470). Or, on the other hand, you can use the Pandora Battery, but that's only an option if you have a friend with homebrew. Guide for that can be found HERE (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3238).

ooook ... now ... correct me if im totally wrong here .... but let´s say i buy a psp today, get it with new firmware, then i can use this to downgrade to 1.5 and install M33´s newest ... then if i want to i can downgrade to 1.5 again, and then install one of sony´s newest ? .... or will that cause a "brick" ? ...
and if i install M33´s newest from 1.5 will i be able to run everything, or do i have to install M33´s from a newer sony version ?
(been reading alot of topics here, but the more i read, the more confused i get .... so what im saying is, any help would be greatly appreciated)

Well now, we use "Pandora Battery" to downgrade our firmware back to 1.5. But you'll need some one with a customfirmware to convert your battery.
Or you can:
If you have 3.50(NOT 3.51 or 3.52), use the 3.50 downgrade guide with a copy of Lumines.
If you have 2.81-3.03, upgrade to 3.03 and downgrade with a copy of unpated GTA:LCS.
For 2.80, use the 2.80 downgrade guide.
For 1.51-2.71 use the 2.71 downgrade guide.
After you're on 1.5, upgrade to M33 directly, you don't need it from a newer sony version.
After you're on M33(or any custom firware), you can revert back to any firmware(both custom and official you pleasure). Chance are bricking (means a bad upgrade or downgrade, you psp can't even boot, only the power light is on) is VERY little if you follow the guide slowly step by step. :).
hope it helps.
If you have futher questions, feel free to post in the PSP Help Center.

The TOOL battery will put you into service mode, all you need is the memory stick with the Despertar del Cementerio files on it and all should work.

Are you trying to run the game from within DevHook? If so... don't do that, just run it directly from the 1.5 firmware.

Sorry for the noob question ya'all~ but recently my brother upgraded his PSP 3.51 OE to a 3.80 M33-5 and won't cha know it, most of his games won't run. He's totally glued to samurai warriors and the bloody thing just won't run on the 3.80.
So this is what I am planning to do after reading through the forum:
1. DL the 3.51OE update from the Godly Dark Alex website
2. Copy the extracted files to X:\PSP\GAME
3. DL the 351.PBP file and move it into the same folder
4. Boot up the PSP, browse to the update and just run it...
Am I on the road to damnation or am I on the right track

Better yet, I think you should go to 3.52M33 (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=2732) FIRST. Then update the 3.52M33-4 (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3185) patch.
After that, when in the XMB, Press home and a menu should show up in middle of the screen. Choose the "UMD Mode" to "Sony NP9660". After that try the games and see if it works.

For now 3.80M33 and 3.90M33 can't be downgraded.
(Some one should update this though)
Anyways installing directly won't work, as the newer installers (3.71M33 and after) and more similar to what Sony has, detects the firmware and blocks you if you have firmware later than the one you are installing.
So all we can do is wait...
(So am I :()

Set the kernel to 3.40, and double check if everything is in the correct place. Try again.

I'd dunno, but could be possible.
Why do you need to downgrade? (Just curious)
You could try going up to 3.52M33 first then downgrade.
