My dad brought home an old pc from work. We plugged it in and it asked for a password. Obviously I don't have the password and I was wondering if there was anyway to bypass it so I could start using it. Any help would be appreciated.

hmm.....if its a password set in the BIOS then you could take out the CMOS battery to reset it i think :\
if its one a user set in Windows then a fresh install from a disc would take care of that :P

you put a windows install disc in the cd tray and start up the computer.you should be given an option to boot from the cd,if not you'll have to look about the BIOS of the computer which for most computers can be accessed from the startup by pressing f1,f2,f8,f10 or another similar button,it'll usually say in the POST screen what button to press to go to the advanced setup.
when you get to the advanced setup, you'd have to navigate to the boot options and set the cd to the first boot option.
sorry if this is too vague for use but i blame the extremely varied computer systems all about... :\
just try out that and read what comes up on the screen and it should be ok :)

Ok I'll try that and see what happens
EDIT: I tried that and I went to the post screen and when I press f2 it asks me for a password.
EDIT: I let it run and if I press f8 when it's starting up I get these options
Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt
Enable boot logging
Enable VGA mode
Last known good configuration
Directory services restore mode(Windows 2000 domain controller only)
Debugging mode
Boot normally
What do I do now?

the f2 option sounds like the one you're after but if theres a password set then i guess you're buggered....unless the password is set in the CMOS then taking the battery out for a while and popping it back in should wipe it....i wouldn't count on it though....
another option i guess would be Safe Mode....it should show up an admin account which the password for them is often set to admin (it is for many technicians i know) so maybe that could help. :\
i thought you wanted to do a fresh install though?for that you just power on,open the cd tray, put in the windows install disc, close the tray and restart....it should give an option to boot from cd... :\

What does the CMOS battery look like and where can I find it. I just found that we haven't got the windows install disk my dad was trying to use the Microsoft office 200 disk instead so the fresh install can't be done. So I'll have to try the CMOS battery thing instead.

umm...sorry,cant help.....the advice on the CMOS battery thing was to enable the CD to boot so that you could do a fresh install with a Windows install disc but if you havent a copy of it then i cant really help....i wouldnt know how to get rid of a user-set password in windows with no access to windows....unless you were to try the admin account.again a lot of PC techs i know set the password to the admin account as admin....very unlikely to work but its worth a try at least i guess. :)

dude, open up the PC, then look for a clock battery (not like those AA or AAA types, it's really small. Take it out for like...25 secs, that should reset the bios and let you have access to it to later on install a new version of windows :)

i know im a little late but if its a log on password ona regualr user most times if you boot in safe mode it logs on as the admin so if there is no admin password set then you can boot into safe mode and change settings. If that doesnt work and its a bios password then you should be able to reset the cmos somehow.
