View Full Version : How to convert PSone games to PSP EBOOTs

This guide assumes you are using Open Edition firmware 3.02OE-A or higher.
If you are currently using Sony firmware 3.10 or higher this guide does not apply to you, please see the PSP 3.10+ Firmware Problems (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=1121) thread for more information.

This guide uses the following software:
IsoBuster (http://www.isobuster.com/) (FREE)
PSX2PSP v.1.2 - PopStation GUI (http://www.exophase.com/files/psp/psx2psp v.1.2.zip)

Before we can begin you must install IsoBuster and PSX2PSP.
The first time you launch IsoBuster it will prompt you to register. I recommend using the "Free funct. only" since it provides the reliable ISO ripping you need (however because it is a very good utility if you decide to purchase and register a copy more power to you).
The first time you launch PSX2PSP it will prompt you to select a mode. I recommend using Theme Mode as it allows you to preview the results of your custom EBOOT menu.

To begin converting PSone games to PSP you must first extract the ISO to your PC.
Insert the CD of your PSX game into your PC. In IsoBuster you will see the the session(s), track(s) and file-systems of your disc.
Right-click the CD listing at the top of the tree on the left and choose Extract CD < Image > RAW (*.bin, *.iso). It will ask where to save the BIN and after the extraction where to save the CUE.
For the BIN file to work with PSX2PSP you must add .iso to the end of the generic BIN file that IsoBuster created.
In Theme Mode of PSX2PSP open the Convert Menu. Under ISO/PBP File navigate to where you saved your ISO. PSX2PSP should automatically fill in the Game and Save titles and IDs.
(NOTE: If you are converting a multi-disc game make sure you use the same Save ID on each discs EBOOT.)
Under Output PBP folder navigate to where you want your EBOOT.PBP to be saved after conversion.
From here if you do not wish to customize the EBOOT.PBP menu you can click the Convert button and your playable EBOOT will be created.
If you do wish to customize your menu open the Customize PBP Menu.
Here you can choose which graphics are used for the icon and menu, more specific information will be added for this later.
After you have chosen the graphics you wish to use for your converted PSone game close the Customize PBP Menu and hit the Convert button on the Convert Menu.
Now copy your completed game folder to your PSP memory stick under X:\PSP\Game\
You are now able to play your favorite PSone game on your PSP!

NOTES:
Not every game plays with 100% accuracy, tweaks and PopStation improvements are always forthcoming.
This tutorial is a rough draft and will be improved upon at a later time, likely with pictures and a troubleshooting list.

Nice one Krelian. Now if only I could find my old copy of Final Fantasy VIII...
By the way, IsoBuster is a great app., but MagicIso has worked well for me in the past too.

can you only have 1 ps1 game at a time?

that's pretty annoying

Cheezeball99
06-23-2007, 07:39 PM
Not at all, Nimrod, you have to set the EBOOT.PBP and the DOCUMENT.DAT into it's own folder, like for instance GAME/Final Fantasy IX would contain the Eboot and the DAT for FF9. I, right now, have 7 on my memstick, I believe. (Document.dat isn't necessary, but I use it.)

I've just searched manually and found the latest version of popstation was given out in 3.03 OE-c correct?

I created an EBOOT using 3.03 OE and then since it doesn't work completely I wanted to try the OE-c version of popstation. However the memory card does not show any saves when I copied the saved data over from the older EBOOT folder to the OE-c version. Is there a way to use the saves from the older version in the newer version?

Your saves have to be converted. Make a backup of all of them on your computer in case you go back down to a lower firmware. Then the first time you play a playstation game it will ask you if you want to convert your save. accept it and you should have all your saves back but you cant use them witha lower firmware k.

Yeah it is compatible with 3.51 M33.

About the save format... when you run a PSone game on 3.40 or 3.51 for the first time, it will simply ask you to covert all your save files. Once you do this, the save files will be unusable in any firmware lower than 3.40.

So, if you are ever planning to return back to 3.30 OE for example, it is a good idea to back-up your saves.

Yeah, I'd say approximately 95% of games ARE compatible; some, however, are not. That's probably one of them. It also has some odd problems with PAL games sometimes.

We used to have one around here, I'll check... Although, honestly, like I say, 95% of your games should work, seriously- I haven't personally had a game not work since 3.30OE-A, and I constantly cycle through different Popstation games.:thumbup1:

EDIT: HERE (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=889) is the compatibility list.

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, But for multi-disk games that require a disk swap, would you still have them in Different folders under X:/PSP/GAME ? or how would you work that? Just Curious.

Regards,
Derek

P.S. I love you people, these guides will save me SO much money from having to pay $50 for every freakin PS1 remake.

Also, I just did all the steps you had, I'm using 3.03 OE-A and the games have an error whenever I try to play one.

RJC4LIFE

Multi disc games require the same disc ID so when converting take this into consideration.
For instance FFVII Eboots would need to have the same ID for each disc, just use the ID of the first disc for the others.

Oh wait, folders? Yeah, different folders. And the naming of the folders doesn't have to be the same, nor do you have to use the same pics, icons etc. Just the same ID.
X:PSP/GAME:FFVII DISC1
X:PSP/GAME:FFVII DISC2 etc.

It's most likely a popsloader bug. You could try updating to 3.71 M33 or try an older pops version by using the Universal Popsloader that is included with the 3.52 M33-4 update.

There's instructions on how to set up the universal popsloader here:

the universal popsloader look confusing so i didn't attempt it since it is talking about 3.40 while i was in 3.52 m33

the copyright screen is part of the original of the original disc,do you mean that it freezes at the copyright screen?if so, then it may be that the original disc that you copied from is scratched.not much you can do about it if it is scratched although if you live in the UK, GAME does a disc repair service....not sure how effective it is though since i've never had reason to use it.

I just got firmwear 3.71 m33-2 up and running but I cannot get any ps1 games to play. I have followed the above method (although where I found it, it was not so neatly written) using psx2psp and popstation4 and neither will work. The games are created correctly (i believe) and I can see them in the game screen of my psp with icon I made for them but when I try to load them I get a generic loading screen then it says "the game could not be started (80010002)". I have looked everywhere and I have not been able to find any help. I was wondering if there is a setting in the recovery menu I need to change or if VSH menu, or if my memory card is somehow responsible (sony 8gb)??? also replying to the first post in this thread "(NOTE: If you are converting a multi-disc game make sure you use the same Save ID on each discs EBOOT.)" what exactly does this mean and how do you do it? I am interested because all of the games I want to play are multi disks. Thanks for reading my tale of woe.

Eudeneuden:

I don't know how this will help you, but the same error code turned up when I was trying to upgrade my firmware, and it was because I was taking steps that weren't necessary (I was trying to downgrade when I didn't need to). Maybe you should see if the 3.71 kernel is running instead of the 1.5. To do this you hold down the R trigger while booting up the PSP and you go to configuration. Go down to game foler homebrew and hit X to change between 1.5, 3.52 (or something) and 3.71. Other than that I can't really help because I need help myself...

So what I need help with is similar. I got the EBOOT to work and it loads then shows copyright, then the PS1 screen, then goes black and I can't play. I tried reset but that didn't work. Maybe it's the game: Crash Team Racing. If you guys know whats up (even if it's just inside that 5% of non-working games) please let me know. Thank you!

EDIT: One thing that I forgot: Does Frogger work because I want to play that game SO badly! Also, this guide is REALLY easy to follow, so thanks a lot. If anybody wants to talk to me about unlocking the fullest potential of ISOBuster in conjuncture with another program (I'm not talking about a keygen or anything to illegally obtain ISOBuster Premium, just using the free version with another program) PM me and I'll walk you through it. I'm not so good with this PSP stuff, but music and movies are my field.

Thanks for your help but it was for not. I tried switching to 1.5 and even moved the created game folder and eboot to all three game folders (GAME, GAME 150 and GAME 371) and it didnt help.

if you dont mind sharing (Rethink_That) what firmwair are you sporting and what are your current settings in your recovery/MVS menus?

In addition to my earlier post... i dont know if this is extraneous information but when I put the EBOOT file I make with psx2psp (a single eboot.PBP file in a folder named after the game code) in my game folder and access through the psp game menu I get the icon that i made for the game, but I also get a corrupted data icon at the end of my list. hopefully this may help.

Yes, incompatible games usually display a black screen. Have you tried any other PSX games to see if they work?

I do have the newest version of psx2psp (v1.2). I have switched back and forth between the 1.5 and 3.71 kernel placing a game in each game folder (GAME, GAME 1.5 and GAME 371) on my memory card, trying all combinations, and I still cannot play. I tried an alternative method using autopopstation4 and what it produces is different from psx2psp. It will create 2 files (.DAT and .PBP) where psx2psp only creates the folder with the game id as its name and one eboot file (.PBP). Neither method has (so far) worked for me but I was wondering if using one program or the other is better (I like psx2psp better cuz it looks up the game id and save id for you).
If you could please let me know anything else that you think it might be, or where else I could look to help get this fixed I would be forever grateful. I have been working on this for three days now with no results. Have you seen that movie scanners, my head feels like the guy at the end.
The games I wave been trying to get going are FF7,8,9, Parasite eve, and marvel vs capcom (as a control because all of my other games are multi disks). Also should I have any other folders in my game folder besides the one I add with the eboot file? I ask this because when I look at my snes emulator there is two folder, one named SNES9xTYL and another named SNES9xTYL%. should I be making folders like these to hold my psx roms (probably a stupid question but im running out if ideas)?

and one more thing...
when I make rip the image from the ps1 disk should it be named xxxx.bin.iso, or just xxxx.iso?

and should I have the "apply patches" option checked?

also what settings should be checked under the option tab to make these work?

x3sphere
11-07-2007, 07:57 PM
Shouldn't need to touch any of the options in the PSX2PSP config. By any chance did you install the 1.5 kernel patch for 3.71 M33-2? Some users have reported problems with booting PSX games after applying the patch.

It's ok if you have other folders in the GAME folder.

There are no converters aimed at the Mac specifically. In fact, there's nothing for anything other than Windows except for a python script I wrote for linux. While it could be used with other platforms than linux, it would require a bit more knowledge than most people have.

You can find the python script here:
http://forums.exophase.com/showpost.php?p=22284&postcount=11

It DOES work on OSX, but I had trouble getting it to use the internal drive on my old G3. I wasn't too worried about it at the time as I mostly use linux. You might have to set up your Mac to dual boot between OSX and linux and use the script in linux.

What version of POPS Loader are you using? Did you follow the instructions to a Tee? Did you change the endings of the files in "seplugins" to the version of Popsloader you were loading... for example: 3.72Popsloader then you would rename the ".prx" files in the X:/seplugins/Popsloader with the version of Pops you would like to use such as: "pops.prx" and rename it to "pops372.prx".

Btw... what happens if the 2nd cd of a game with the SAME savegame ID doesnīt find the savegames of the 1st cd? Iīm at the end of Grandia cd1 (GAME ID & SAVE ID SCUS94457), just made cd2 (GAME ID SCUS94465 SAVE ID SCUS94457) and it doesnīt find anything, what is going on here:S? Both cds are of the same version, the psx2psp program version is the same (1.2), i donīt know whatīs going on...

EDIT: After some tests i realized that by starting the 2nd cd the screen size definitions of the emulator (which saves on the same folder as the savegames one) saved on a folder with the same name as its GAME ID, dispite having the SAME SAVE ID. Which means... sorry to say but the Save ID thingie is BULL, unless thereīs something wrong with my psp2psx program the SAVE ID does NOTHING cause it still saves data based on its GAME ID and NOT SAVE ID. So with this, i found two choices for it to work... either create the 2nd cd with the same Game ID (making it impossible to have both cds on the PSP) OR copying the .vmp (ps1 memory card files) to the savedata of the 2nd cd, and it sure finds the files that way cause i tested... but this is still kinda unpractical... everytime i wanna use the other cd i have to manually update the files on that cdīs savedata ID.

Well, i want answers... good ones, i sure hope someone here actually did play a multi-disc ps1 rpg seriously, without just playing it a bit and saying 'yay this is cool, portable ps1 and all', preferably someone that completed one cd at least. And if you can point a problem of mine and prove to me that the Save ID thing is not bullshit, the better.

Oh and.. before i forget, iīm using 3.90m33-2 with popsloader 2.72.

Well... the name of the folder doesn't matter, but yes, the EBOOT file must be placed inside of another folder located in the GAME directory.

If you have another EBOOT, create a separate folder for it. Also the EBOOT file must be named EBOOT.PBP, nothing else, otherwise the PSP won't recognize it.

I have Final Fantasy 7 (bought and paid for), going to convert them but is it better to have a mulit disk eboot or 3 seperate ones?

I have the product code on the side of the box so no issues there but what about game saves, not new to PSX>PSP but this the first time i have done a multi disk one?

Will this guide cover multi disk? Thxs
