Hey i just wanted to get peoples opinions of vista. I got a few already lol but i was wondering if people who have used it could say what type they had and some pros and cons. Also the problems they ran into. Also any tweaks or tips you might have.
Vista Premium 64bit
Pros: Runs Great, no crashes, looks pretty, Supports all the programs i use. Oh and easy to set up and use.
Cons: I havent really found one yet except at first i didnt have drivers for everthing.
Problems i ran into: Well my only big problem was that one no drivers for my wireless but that was fixed. THe other one wasnt vista itself it was conflicts with ati drivers and my logitech g15 drivers and software. It went to instant bsod. But logitech came out with a fix so it all works great now.
Tweaks/Tips: THe only thing i know is that if you go to msconfig then boot and check no gui boot it makes the boot screen a little pretier.

Terrible. Ran it on a friend's computer and froze it 2 times in twenty minutes, then quit and proclaimed my house be a house forever Vista-free.

Yeah, freshly-bought, I mean, me and my friend took it out of the box and hooked it up just before that. Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, 500 HD, etc.
I mean, all I did was try to put in a f@ckin SD card, BAM, frozen.
Went to 'My Computer', BAM, frozen.

I tested vista myself...
My PC :
Dual Core @ 3.4
1GB ram @ DDr2
160HD IDE
ATI Radeon 9600 PRO
and erm...I noticed some slow downs in vista, and it did crash a lotta times with me...and the infernal bugging with the "do you give permission to " warning...and the fact it consumes 60% of my RAM just from the OS itself (and the process manager doesn't show ALL processes)
and a lot more complaints... resuming:
... I HATE IT!
GOD BLESS WINDOWS XP AND ALL IT'S GLORY BECAUSE IT WORKS! IT JUST DOES!

i looked into why it uses so much ram and its not actually vista using it it remembers what you use most and pre caches it in ram so it will load faster when you open. Aparently from the thing i read i will try and find a link to one the memory controlling in vista is alot smarter and more efficient then xp. And i think microsoft lied about vist i think you need 2gigs of ram for it to run perfectly smooth.

Vista is fine. Not a fan of the UAC prompts though, so I turned that off.
In terms of compatibility it is good. Only application I've had trouble with is Hamachi.
Also I turned off the glass theme. It is nice and all but there is a noticeable lag when scrolling on simple web pages etc. I assume this is a driver problem, since the glass effects themselves are smooth.

Yep, my friend had this soundBlaster Card, Vista wouldn't accept it, he had to find Hacked drivers and THEN buy a new one that was compatible

Im reviving this thread. Wanted to know how people are thinking about vista now. Its been 3 months and to me its got even better. It is definately faster then xp and it also performs better in most games for me now. Just wondering if anyone had better experiences. Oh and by the way the dreamscene is awsome.

Well I've gone back to Vista and it runs all my stuff pretty good. And it is pretty fast. The only thing I didn't like at the start was all that prompt stuff but you get used to it. Is there a way to turn it off btw?

I love vista it runs so smooth and my performance in games is just as good as in xp. Bioshock ran perfectly. ONly complaint i have is they still havent fixed file transfer speeds. Its readiculouse that it transfers at like 40mb'/s on raid 0

I had vista installed for about a week. Vista made me so angry that i decided to learn linux.
Vista is basically the "ME" of operating systems. We all know how well Windows ME did.

If you have new hardware plus 4GB+ RAM get Vista X64 ultimate
BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE YOU TRY THIS!!!!!!!!
1. Following code contains a few registry modifications, which are completely safe and can increase the performance of Windows Vista. Just paste following code in Notepad, save the file with name "Vishal.reg" (including quotes) and then run it:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\Con textMenuHandlers\Copy To]
@="{C2FBB630-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\Con textMenuHandlers\Move To]
@="{C2FBB631-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\cmd]

"LinkResolveIgnoreLinkInfo"=dword:00000001
"NoResolveSearch"=dword:00000001
"NoResolveTrack"=dword:00000001
"NoInternetOpenWith"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l]
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="2000"
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer]2. Right-click on My Computer icon on Desktop and select Properties (or press <WIN> key + <Pause/Break> key), click on Advanced system settings link in left side pane (You can also open it by typing sysdm.cpl in RUN or start menu search box and press Enter). Now click on Settings button in Performance section:
Now disable all unnecessary options in Visual Effects tab, you can remain following options enabled according to your requirements:
Enable desktop composition (If you want to use Windows Aero theme)
Enable transparent glass (If you want to use transparency in Windows)
Show preview and filters in folder (If you use Details Pane in Explorer)
Show thumbnails instead of icons (If you want to show thumbnails in Explorer)
Show window contents while dragging (If you want windows to show content while moving them)
Smooth edges of screen fonts (If you want to show smooth fonts)
Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop (If you want to show shadows under desktop icon labels)
Use visual styles on windows and buttons (If you want to use Windows Aero or Basic theme.)
3. Open Folder Options and click on View tab:
Now disable following options:
Display file size information in folder tips.
Display simple folder view in Navigation pane.
Hide extensions for known file types.
Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color.
Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items.
Other options don't affect the system performance. You can enable/disable them according to your requirements.
4. Right-click on My Computer icon on Desktop and select Manage (You can also open it by typing services.msc in RUN or start menu search box and press Enter).
Now goto Services & Applications -> Services. Here you can set a few unnecessary services to Manual, which will not start with windows and will decrease the boot time and will increase system performance.
Please follow the following tutorial to know about which services can be safely set to MANUAL:
Windows Vista Services that can be Safely set to MANUAL
5. Type msconfig in RUN or Startmenu search box and press Enter. Now goto Startup tab and deselect the unnecessary entries, which you don't want to start automatically with Windows, e.g. you can disable VGA driver utility, Sound Card utility, etc to speed up the startup time and to increase system performance.
You can also disable these items using Windows Defender. Open Windows Defender and click on Tools and then click on "Software Explorer".
6. Open Sound in Control Panel (or type mmsys.cpl in RUN or Startmenu search box and press Enter), goto Sounds tab and select No Sounds in Sound Scheme section. Or you can remain some of your favorite sounds but set Exit Windows, Windows Logoff, Windows Logon and Start Navigation to (None).
7. After following all above mentioned points, you'll see a big improvement in your Windows Vista performance.
8. At last I'll advise to defrag the HDD regularly, install only necessary software, use the latest drivers and keep your Windows updated.

All you need is 2gb of ram for vista. I say its worth upgrading becuase in my experince i performs just as good but is much more stable. Do the upgrade.
