i think this was asked before but i cant remember.....would it be legal for me to burn a CD of a Windows Install Disc from a ISO I download from the internet as long as I use the COA key i have?

reason is i got a new laptop but no reinstall disc's and with any used laptops i like to do a fresh install.there is a COA sticker on the bottom for Windows XP Home edition so if i was to download an ISO of the install disc and use the key on the sticker then that would be alright, wouldnt it?

Yup, just make sure you contact M$ and tell them that you are re-installing Windows, so you can activate it, because they'll let you do it, you just have to tell them so your activation goes through.

well we all know downloading copyrighted software...windows for that sake is illegal. not that I'm accusing you or anything but as far as todays world implys downloading a windows installation disc is considered Warez downloading.

Actually, it's not- M$ will send you a copy of the disc free, for just s&h. When you buy Windows you buy the license to USE Windows- no-one actually OWNS Windows other than M$.

i didnt say MS didnt own windows and MenaceInc said he downloaded it from the net, which is considered illegal (warez) since he didnt buy it online and has supposedly downloaded it from a source other then MS. when you buy a copy of windows you receive the license to use that copy which you bought, not another one.

Well, if that's so then why do they send you another copy free (plus S&H) if you request one? He's paid, he's attained a license legally 'n' such, so there is no reason he can't use another disc.

i like that, two people arguing over whether a download copy would be illegal because it's downloaded, even though if you ask Ms they will give you a disc free, and you walk in and say, you in bypass activation with NLite:w00t:

well its pretty obvious he didn't request one from MS. and paying for something and obtaining a license for a product as far as i see doesn't mean you get total freedom of usage over the product, which i am sure you will agree since we are part of the psp homebrew community and know how sony hates to see users forsake them for homebrew developments. besides that isnt what this was about, he asked if using a downloaded ISO (which MS never Has Available For Downloading so its an illegal copy floating around the net) is legal which if you ask MS i am sure they will say "no it isnt"

Most downloaded ISO files of Windows Xp have been altered to skip the activation process. These files would be considered illegal.

Thats a really good point. But say if it was a an iso of a legit windows cd that you downloaded directly from a friend or someone you knew. Or even lets just say its and untampered image.

On the contrary, most of them just have the crack to falsify the activation process, it's not already done.
