Here is a step by step guide for installing custom firmware 3.60 M33 on the PSP Slim and Lite. You cannot install this 3.60 M33 release on older PSP units, it is only for the Slim model.

Prerequisites
Pandora's Battery
Memory Stick PRO DUO with Pandora files

Note: If you don't have either yet, then follow the guide (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3238) for converting a battery to Pandora and installing the memory stick files. It requires a homebrew-capable regular PSP. There is also an easy installer (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3312) available courtesy of XsavioR.

Files:
3.60 M33 Install Files (http://exophase.com/files/psp/360M33_for_Slim.zip)

Install Guide

Before you begin: The following steps must be executed on a homebrew-capable regular PSP with a regular battery inserted. The inserted memory stick must contain the Pandora files, as noted in the prerequisites section above .

1. Extract the 3.60 M33 Install Files ZIP

2. Copy firmwares 3.40 (http://exophase.com/files/psp/340.PBP) and 3.50 (http://exophase.com/files/psp/350.PBP) to the pandora_silm directory, with the names 340.PBP and 350.PBP

3. Copy both pandora_slim and pandora_slim% folders to X:/PSP/GAME150 on the memory stick.

4. Navigate to the Game menu on the PSP and execute the 3.60 M33 installer. The program will overwrite some files on the memory stick, making it compatible with the PSP Slim and Lite.

The next steps: If you've followed the guide thus far, you have all the necessary files to install 3.60 M33 on the PSP Slim and Lite. Insert the Pandora's Battery into the PSP Slim as well as the memory stick with the new files.

5. Boot the PSP Slim. It should boot to a black screen, but no worries :)

You have three options here -

Press X to install M33. The process will last just few seconds, since the installer only
needs to install the M33 custom PRX files and IPL. Once finished, the installer will shutdown the PSP automatically.

Press L+R+triangle to uninstall M33 and go back to original 3.60. Note: this can't unbrick a PSP Slim, it will just remove M33 IPL. There is currently no unbricker for the PSP Slim, but we plan on doing one in the future. After uninstalling, PSP will be shutdown automatically.

Press Square to dump the PSP Slim NAND. Watch out: you need 66 MB of free space in the memory stick for this, otherwise your memory stick may end corrupted. When finished, the orange memory stick LED will stop blinking. From here you can either shut down the PSP or choose a different option.

6. If you chose to press X and install 3.60 M33 then you're finished :) Boot up the PSP and enjoy the benefits of custom firmware!

Works great! I've got 3.60 M33 running on my Ice Silver right now. :)

One hint - watch the WLAN light on the bottom left. It is on when all this is working. It goes off when the PSP is off (after installing). This is important as you don't have any screen display while this is going on.

One question, If I choose to first Press [] and back up my NAND what happens after this, does the PSP shutdown and than I re-follow the steps and than press X or after the backup does it refer back to the the 'menu' and I simply press X?

Hope I worded that right I think you'll get what I'm on about. Thanks.

EDIT: As a side, so pretty much all Sony did was stop the menu appearing on the screen? Seems like an ultra quick fix ha.

Sony uses a new LCD module. While the one in the TA-086 was mostly compatible (you only had the brightness bug), the one in the Slim is not compatible at all. So you don't get any display until it can use the 3.60 display libs. I imagine when Sony puts out a 3.61 or whatever update for the Slim, M33 will go back and have their app extract the display libs from it to use during install. It's only right this moment when the only 3.60 out is in the NAND of the PSP Slim that we can't get a display lib that works on the Slim.

Thanks for the explanation. The only other question I have is can this firmware be blocked by firmware updates?

No. The service mode triggered by the battery is lower level than that. They can't block this without changing the hardware. Maybe the next hardware revision of the PSP won't work with the batteries, but until then, there's nothing they can do in the firmware that service mode can't bypass.

after i run the app on my psp, can i still use it as an original pandora battery to downgrade old PSPs? or is the pandora battery "slim-compatible-only"?

The battery itself stays the same. However, the memory stick files are changed and cannot be used with a regular PSP.

So to the memory stick back to normal you'll have to format it and then install back the old files.

If it's a third-party battery, it might not work. Original Sony batteries should work fine. My guess if you're not doing something correctly. Print the guide(s) out and cross off each step as you do it. That way you don't skip a step or do them out of order.

You only need 1 battery (regular PSP style) and 1 memory stick.

To convert the battery back to normal make sure you backed-up the battery EEPROM when converting then follow this guide:

Well, 1 battery and two memsticks if you wish to keep a stick for phat and one for slim. That's what I have - one battery left as pandora, one stick with the regular pandora stuff to take care of the phat psp, and another stick set for the slim.

of course, it runs like a normal batter except it changes the ipl and some info to let the system boot with a memory stick. besides that it's just like a normal battery.
so when you're not using it, i'd perfer charging it in case you need it all of a sudden. :)

Yep. You can get external chargers for PSP batteries from places like WalMart. From reports, the Pandora stuff looks for at least a 50% charge on the battery.

I have a question.

What exactly is a NAND backup? And do I need to backup the keys as well or no? When I first downgraded my non-slim PSP, I recall installing a Custom IPL and fixing key 5. Will this be necessary for the slim? Thanks. :)

It's a complete backup of the files on the PSP's flash memory. No need to mess with the keys on a Slim... they should all be left alone.

Perhaps... the black screen is normal and the memory stick should flash for a few seconds then the PSP will shut down.

So the memory stick did not flash at all? It might check the battery level then, plug the AC in then let it charge for about an hour.

Hmm i think there must be something wrong with my Pandora Battery, in both PSPs only Powerled is on and nothing happens when I trigger the power button. Its an original Sony "fat" PSP battery and converting it to Pandora battery worked as in the description.

To install homebrew, just copy over any folder which contains an EBOOT.PBP to X:/PSP/GAME

Then it'll show up in the Game menu on the PSP.

Oh okay, well for ISOs do this. Press HOME in the PSP main menu screen and toggle UMD ISO Mode to "Sony NP9660"

That should fix your problem.

Nope, according to a few people using the battery creator on a Slim battery will render it unusable. Only use the creator on a regular Phat battery.

Just so you know, I believe there's a little typo on the install guide. You typed "silm" instead of "slim", nothing big. :P

And I just opened my slim. I would've prefered a white one but they aren't out and I definitely wouldn't want a Star Wars one. And I wouldn't be patient enough to wait for the core pack. I feel somewhat ripped off; as others have said, the slim seems cheaply made. However, the improvements balance that out so I guess I have mixed feelings. Thanks again! :)

Can someone clear 2 things up for me, or maybe let me know if I'm actually right?

The only real feature missing from the PSP slim and lite is that the screen is not compatible with firmware version 2.xx and lower, right?

If that is the case, couldn't you do the following?
1) Use a regular Pandora battery with magick stick to downgrade the PSP Slim and Lite to version 1.50 (I've looked eBay and people seem to think this downgrade works on the slim, even though perhaps the screen doesn't work.)
2) Modify the magick stick (or use a new one), putting the 3.60 installer, and 3.40 and 3.50 firmwares etc on it, as listed in instructions.
3) Insert these into your PSP Slim and Lite
4) Turn it on, wait for bootup, enter in the right combination of button presses to make it run the 3.60 installer program, even though you will have no picture on the screen (but it will still actually successfully run the program.)
5) Wait perhaps more time than strictly necessary for it to finish running the program, just to be safe.
6) Turn off PSP slim and lite, put in the pandora battery and turn back on, following the rest of the guide as stated.

If this is correct, all we need is for someone to
1) Give an approximation of how long it takes to load up the PSP slim and lite in order to run the application.
2) Tell us the EXACT sequence of button presses in order to run the installer.
3) Tell us how long it takes for the installer to run.
4) That's about it.
right?

My next question is...

Wouldn't the modified Pandora Battery with Magick card described in the instructions effectively unbrick a bricked PSP Slim and Lite? A bricked PSP is one where the firmware never fully flashed so now it can't boot up, right? The Pandora Battery with Magick card rewrites the firmware, right? So it effectively unbricks a PSP, just not with the original firmware.

Can someone tell me if I'm right or if not why I'm wrong?

Thanks all!

You are right the display driver isn't compatible, but still firmware 1.50 won't even boot on the Slim (probably due to added Sony protections). The good news is that D_A is planning to release an unbricker for the Slim, which will do as you suggested, but instead install 3.71 M33 instead of 1.50.

... and it is released now: http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3739

What files are originally on a brand new PRO DUO mem stick?
When you format the mem.stick and install the pandora's files on it,
will you be able to back it up to its original state, so it is usable on the psp for games\movies etc, after installing custom firmware?
I plan on using my only mem.stick (8gb) to do the downgrading pandora process, however i still want to use it for my psp storage afterwards.

The PSP will only boot from the memory stick if a Pandora battery is inserted. You need to format the memory stick with mspformat before installing the Pandora files because it places the IPL on a certain sector of the memory stick.

Hello all,

I guess this question has been already asked hundred of times and I apologize for that but please let me ask it nevertheless :)

I'm the happy owner of a PSP Slim running the official 3.60 firmware and I want to flash it to 3.60M33 but is there any way to build the magic memory stick & Pandora battery without a homebrew capable regular PSP ?

For example is there a way for anybody to create a raw image of a magic memory stick using dd for example and share it to others?

Thanks in advance for your help !

Natch, there isn't.
(Actually there is but it's illegal)
there IS a way, to look for people in the forums of noobz.eu (http://noobz.eu), there's a thread with people willing to help you convert your batteries and memory, with a small fee maybe.
Also you'll need a phat PSP battery in order to work.

the image method doesn't work as the memory stick needs to be formatted logically before certain files are written.

The battery fits fine, the cover won't close with a Phat battery inserted though. But no biggie, you only need it inserted during the installation process.

Well did you read the guide? It's normal for the PSP to boot to a black screen

5. Boot the PSP Slim. It should boot to a black screen, but no worries.

Looks like you somehow bricked it though.

Check out this guide on restoring: http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780

Since you already have a Pandora battery, you'll only need to follow the steps outlined to create a magic memory stick.

On your XMB (Homescreen of the PSP), Go to Settings -> System -> System Information. And see what it says.

Sorry mate, you'll need 3.60 in order to use this.

If you know anyone near by that has a PSP with custom firmware, use THIS (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780) guide.

Or else, check out this guide HERE (http://forums.noobz.eu/downgrader-support/people-who-can-help-you-unbrickdowngrade-a-psp-using-pandora/0/) and see if there's anyone near your area.

These are your best bets mate.

One thing you should notice is that this installation can only be done on a custom firmware

M33 supports 8GB memory sticks, it's just older homebrew applications that are incompatible with them.

3.60 is pretty outdated now. But anyways how is it saying error if the 3.60 M33 updater outputs nothing to the screen? There should only be a black screen when booting with the Pandora battery and magic memory stick. Take note of these steps:

Well if the battery is still a Pandora then that's very normal that it isn't booting up. You will need to boot with the AC adapter, then insert the battery, and use Hellcat's Pandora Installer (http://exophase.com/files/psp/pan3xxr3a.rar) to convert it back to normal.

Should see a screen like this when you boot up the application:

Press square to convert the battery back to normal.

If you do it right, the chances of bricking is less than being struck by lightening.

So what happens if it does brick? can anyone give me a tutorial on how to unbrick it?

I'm trying to prepare for the worst:blushing:

Well, use the universal unbricker.
Besides, the universal unbricker gets you to custom firmware, so you should make the universal unbricker instead, and get to CFW directly

3.60M33 is buggy too...

HawkEye73

So what is the most advanced and best custom firmware on a psp slim? eg. 3.75 M33? (probably isn't just using it as an example)

If I wanted that custom firmware I would have to upgrade 3.60 (my firmware) to 3.75 (eg.) and then install custom firmware for that version I have?

Regards, :confused1:

3.60 M33 works on TA-085 V2, and TA-088 V1, and TA-088 V2 PSP Slim

There are two ways to get it on the TA-085 and TA-088:

1. Install 3.60 with Freeplay 3.60 Flasher, then use M33 3.60 Installer

2. Hellcat Recovery Flasher, install 3.60 M33 through a CFW/flash0 dump using the CFW restore function.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And for TA-088 V2, to get 3.60 M33 on that is: use Hellcat Recovery Flasher, install 3.60 M33 through a CFW/flash0 dump using the CFW restore function.

And does anyone know if 3.60 M33 can run on TA-090 V1/PSP-2000?
