ok,i have a HP Pavillion ze2000...

think the processor is a Celeron@1.3GHz
512MB ram
some onboard intel graphics chipset.. :\
and an alright 40gig HD.

thats the basics...anyways,i was looking to install a linux disto onto it....mainly for fun but also to get up some experience with other OS's.i'd need a couple of things though and was looking advice from other people here as to what distrobution would be the best....

things i want to do....

compile PSP programs,
play music,
play some if not all windows games,
browse internet sites,
connect up my PSP and Nokia 6300 to move media,
look at graphic files,
edit graphic files like jpg's,gif's,png's,
look at pdf files,
edit documents such as word documents and html documents,
have an IRC client,
have an IM client, (maybe combine those two)...
burn CD's (both data and music),
rip CD's to mp3@128kbs,
connect to iPod to update music and work,
download torrents,
watch DVD's and AVI files,
open and create .zip and .rar files,
and any other random cool stuff :P

i'm not completely lazy so i have tried to look up some of this stuff and it's just been infomation overload....

windows games can be handled by WINE....hopefully...lol.
there is a linux version of Firefox,
there is a linux version of Foxit Reader for the PDF's,
again,a linux version of BitTorrent I can get...the rest I have no idea....
any help from anyone who has a linux distro?.... :)

also,I have a second monitor hooked up to my laptop that i use as the first screen and then the laptop monitor is the second screen so i would need multiple monitor support as well ^_^

Use Ubuntu Linux

It has this cool program called synaptic, it can search in an enormous list of programs for linux and installs them at your order :)

maybe it will be simpler for you to learn linux =D

I have used it, dont bother using it, use VLC for linux and Totem (I think it downloads the needed codecs by itself so yeah, it'd be easyer for you :D)

And if you love winamp you will love XMMS, it's like the winamp for linux though it's no longer developed :X And if you want I can teach you how to make it use midi =D

MIDI support would be great :D

just burnt off unbuntu and xubuntu...both 7.04 so gunna try those live CD's and see how they feel.also, note that i don't have internet access at my house....my sis ran up a huge phone bill...that SHOULD be sorted...soonish....maybe...but i'd still have access to mum's bf's internet.

also, just wondering but i should be able to just install the psp toolchain in a terminal in linux since cygwin is based on a UNIX system, right?

thanks.tried out both of them and i prefer how ubuntu looks. :)

just in the middle of backing up mp3's and pics and programs and stuff....

the only thing i have wrong is the multiple monitor thing....it shows a copy of the desktop on both monitors....what i needed was external monitor to be 1 and notebook monitor to be 2 so 1 runs into 2....ah well,i'll look that up now :P

Went to the site and is it free? Also back to my question could I play most window games on ps3 that aren't very new?

Darkchild

well..to play them you need 3D acceleration, something PS3 doesn't allow in linux, second, if it did play windows games, and have 3D acceleration, yeah, you could,(not all, some and they could have bugs)
