View Full Version : 3.71 M33 Install Guide
x3sphere

Here is a step by step guide for installing 3.71 M33. Please note that you must be running 3.52 M33-3, 3.52 M33-4 or 3.60 M33 to begin this installation.
Note: Before installing 3.71 M33, be warned that it currently is lacking the 1.50 kernel, even on regular (Phat) PSPs. Dark_AleX does plan to release a 1.50 kernel patch within the next few days, but for now you can use the eLoader (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3540) to run 1.50 kernel homebrew on 3.71 M33.
Installation Guide
First grab the 3.71 M33 files (http://exophase.com/files/psp/release.rar) and extract them.
1. Copy the UPDATE folder contained in the archive to X:/PSP/GAME
2. Download the 3.71 EBOOT (http://exophase.com/files/psp/371.PBP), and then place it in X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE
3. Navigate to the Game menu on the PSP and execute the program, it will not run unless there is 78 percent battery free.
4. Press X and the update process will start. Yes it may look similar to a regular Sony update but don't worry!
5. Once finished, the updater will ask you to press X or O to reboot. You MUST do this, otherwise you'll end up with a brick.
6. You've now successfully installed 3.71 M33 :)

One note - because this custom firmware updater runs the actual 3.71 updater, your keys must be good before doing so. The cfw updater will unpatch key 5, but all other keys must be good or the 3.71 updater will quit without updating. This means that people running on a phat PSP should check their keys beforehand. You'll find my latest KeyCleaner here in the PspDevelopment forum.
All the keys reported by KC should be good, with 0x42 and 0x46 being clear, and key 5 being patched. The type of patch for key 5 doesn't matter, so long as it's just a patched key 5. If this is not the case, fix the keys before trying to update.

damn, that's not good. i tried your method your said in KC, going to 2.71 and unpatch key5, when i pressed the update EBOOT it stills asks me to go find a official techition.

Do you only need to unpatch key 5? Then you don't need to go through that method. Just update to 3.52 M33-4 (provided its only key 5 that was patch and the rest weren't corrupted) then update to 3.71 m33. When i updated to 3.71 m33 it unpatched the key and was like installing a normal firmware.

You have to have 3.60M33 installed before you install this, which I can only assume you don't. If you're running Sony 3.71 there is no way to do it at this point, you'll have to wait a bit, there'll be a release to downgrade PSPSL's soon.

i'm running 3.40-OEA now, so... i just follow the guide as it is? Or do i need to downgrade to 1.50 first before proceeding with the guide?
Thanks a bunch.

If only key 5 is patched, it should work fine. That being said... this could be a problem with the idstorage beyond what KeyCleaner can fix.
You know if the PSP was hardware downgraded, or did you downgrade it yourself?

you can't get custom firmware because you are on Sony Official FW (3.7) and a downgrader has not been issued for the psp lite. But if you have the psp phat then you can use pandora to downgrade then upgrade to 3.52 m33-4 then to 3.71 m33. And piracy is not tolerated here.

Strange. Well the error you are getting appears to be due to a damaged idstorage or possibly bad blocks on the nand flash. You could try reinstalling 3.52 M33 and then upgrading back to 3.52 M33-4 to see if that fixes it. Don't really know what else to suggest.

Well right now, you're stuck on a non-homebrew enabled firmware, so the only way is to first downgrade your PSP using Pandora's Battery. There's a guide detailing how to do that here (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3238), however converting the battery requires a homebrew enabled PSP, so you'll need to know someone who has one.
If you don't know anyone who has a homebrew enabled PSP, then it is possible to buy an already converted battery. Might want to take a look at SonicTH's post if you decide to go this route:

i'm having a bit of a problem, at first i tried to update, except it told me that my firmware needs to be higher than 3.52-3, and then I checked and found out I only installed 3.52, and never the -3 or -4 updates. So then I followed the instructions on updating it to -4, and verified it in the system settings.
so then i tried again, but it's still giving me the same error. i've checked and all my keys are okay with 100% battery :X

To fix this, go into recovery mode (hold R during boot) and enter Configuration and set the GAME folder kernel mode to 3.52.

phat psp = older version psp.
A lot of people have objected to calling the older PSP "fat" simply because the new one is called "Slim and Lite", so people started calling it "phat" instead. It's pronounced the same, but phat is actually P.H.A.T., an acronym that stands for Pretty Hot And Temping. It was common slang used several years ago in the US.

one note though, after installing it, verified that it was 3.71, and then headed over to theme and i got an error(that i forgot to take note of) and it basically gave me the corrupted screen and restored everything to 3.71 defaults :X

But I will tell D_A about this, could be a bug in the firmware, as someone else had a similar problem.

I just did my PSP and it came off without a hitch. The guide isn't Noob proof if you aquired the official firmware direct from the company rather than the guide, but I was keen enough to rename the official eboot firmware (I'm a PSP Noob but moreso savvy elsewhere on the PC). Thumbs up to everyone that made this possible.... again!
Edit: I almost forgot to mention. I ran the KeyCleaner and it said all was fine and that key 5 had the legit Chilly Willy patch. The new updater for 3.71M33 then told me that there were problems with my keys and offered to fix them. I did that, and the patch was successful. I then ran KeyCleaner and was told that all my keys were fine and that key 5 was not patched. Does this mean my IDString also was changed or is that a different item than keys?

Check out the guide for installing 3.60 M33. Yes, you will need to create a Pandora battery (use a regular battery only NOT the Slim battery) and magic memory stick to install 3.60 M33.
Creating the battery and installing the memory stick files requires a homebrew-capable PSP.

If you are on official 3.71 then there's only one way out and that is by using a Pandora battery: http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3238
Someone with a homebrew-capable PSP must convert the battery and install the memory stick files for you.

Corrupt memory stick is the most probable cause. Try formatting your memory stick and then copy the files back over.
H, Got an old PSP that works fine with ISO (got original UMD but easier to have all on one disk). Now got new PSP Slim with 3,60 M33, upgraded to 3.71 M33 but can not play ISO (couldnt under 3,60 either). Any ideas? Thanks
Try pressing select in the PSP main menu screen (XMB) and switch the ISO mode to Sony NP9660.

First make sure the 371.PBP was fully downloaded, it should be around 22.5MB.
Secondly make sure it is in the correct folder X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE
Also try formatting the memory stick (backup all files before doing this) and then copy all the files back and try running the updater.

Hey guys,
Just wondering, why does the new 3.71m33-2 release not contain the unmodule.prx file as in the previous 3.71m33 UPDATE folder?
Is this a problem and do we really need it when flashing to 3.71m33-2 from 3.60m33 on a Slim?
I'm trying my best to avoid a brick and want everything to be set correctly.
Also how long does the update take from the time you run it on the PSP to the time you have to press X to reboot?
Cheers in advance.

Because the 3.71 M33-2 is just a small update for 3.71 M33, its not a whole new firmware update. Takes like 5 seconds to install.

Oh okay, so am I correct in thinking, I cannot go directly from 3.60m33 to 3.71m33-2?
Do I just have to install 3.71m33-1 first and then do 3.71m33-2?
With the full update, how long does it take to flash normally?

Hey all, I just updated to 3.71 and added 1.50 correctly. Everything seems to work fine, emulators etc.
Though one game backup I had that was working under 3.40 OE and 1.50 isn't working now, the image that was the correct game image is now replaced with the grey image.
I'm going to try to load it again when I get home and try again.
I tried using the different options in registry 1.50, 3.xx, trying OE isofs legacy -No UMD, Normal, m33 driver, and Sony NP9660. same effect not able to run. error or freezes on black screen, able to power down still after holding it in. It is an iso so its not in the game 150, 303 etc folders.
I may have to re-encode into the new version, I'm just wondering why it changed when I'm still using a 1.50 kernel and now the only difference is 3.71M33
Any help would be appreciated.

It either goes black and shuts down the PSP (crashes) or gives me various error codes including 8002014C (firmware installed doesn't support homebrew I think) and 80020148 (incorrect PRX type?).
Thanks in advance for any help.

No need to set the kernel to 1.50. Anything placed in GAME150 will force the PSP to use 1.5 kernel.

Then nope, doesn't work. PSP just goes black, shuts off.
Moved all emus back to GAME folder where they worked in 3.52-4 M33, now I get error code 80020148 on all of them, or they crash the PSP (RIN GB/GBC emulator does this). Cave Story (freeware homebrew, so I know you can run the homebrew at least) and FFVII disc 1 run perfectly fine (FFVII is of course an ISO).

Also, if you want to run 1.5 homebrew from the GAME folder, you'll need to set that option in recovery to 1.5 kernel. Cave Story works since its written for the 3.X kernel.

Hello I'm considering getting a PSP Slim real soon and I just need to get some facts straight. How would I get 3.71 M33 firmware on my PSP if I have access to a homebrew enabled PSP 1.5 CFW? I would need to get to 3.60 M33 on my PSP before moving onto 3.71 M33. I understand that part.
Let's say I get a new PSP slim and it has 3.60 or 3.71 firmware on it. I would first have to get to 3.60 M33 to move onto 3.71 M33. How would I upgrade to 3.60 M33 CFW? Would I follow the instructions on how to make a service battery (Pandora's Battery), but instead of using the 1.5 FW update, I replace it with 3.60 M33 CFW update? And then I'd revert the battery back to normal, and follow the same steps for making a service battery except this time with 3.71 M33? I'm very confused...please clarify for me. Thanks!

After using eLoader I got pretty sick of it (crashed upon load of Genesis ROMs, crashed at exit of gPSP[??!!]), so I switched to 1.50 kernel again in the recovery menu and everything works fine again!
Weird, but...I'll take it! Hopefully my ROMs don't crash at times like they did on M33 3.52-4...my GB/GBC ROMs crashed all the time at varying intervals...just froze and shut down the PSP. Anyone know why that was happening? I tried multiple emulators, multiple copies of each ROM and they still did it. Checking now if turning hard reset off on homebrew will somehow miraculously fix it.
(Edit: was just playing UMK3 for SNES using SNES9xTYL 0.4.2me++ and I got a red screen of death (I only get these in this emulator) and it said something about read/write fetching being the error or something...very weird. Never got that before. Anyone know why my ROMs/Emus crash?)
Thanks for the help all.

Personally I haven't tried the GB emulator, but gpSP works fine here and doesn't crash. As for the error with SNESTYL, that's nothing to do with the firmware, just a bug in the emulator itself.

Very strange error. Can you try running KeyCleaner (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=1238)? Analyze your idstorage keys with it and fix any corrupt keys it reports, except for key 5.

I ran the key cleaner v1.4 and it said everything checked out, but when I run 3.71 Updater it always says : Verifying 3.71PBP...Cannot open file (0x80010002).

Make sure the EBOOT size is around 22.5MB. Format the memory stick. If it still doesn't work, most likely scenario is that you have a faulty memory stick.

no, just place the PBP file on your memory stick as it states in the guide.
PBP is a format Sony created for PSP. There are programs available for the PC that can extract files from a PBP, but you don't need to do that...

Well if you have a TA-082 mobo and you're not sure that your keys are clean i wouldn't do it, cause that's how I bricked mine on accident (but i have pandora so)
I'd recommend Using KeyCleaner v1.4 (http://forums.exophase.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3013&d=1189919372) first and clean up your keys.
But again, if you have a TA-082 do NOT unpatch key 5 or else you'll PSP will brick.
I remember the installer looks at key8, but you'll need x3 to comfirm that.

PSX games work on 3.71 M33. Also if you follow the old Pandora guide you can create a memory stick that has firmware 1.50 on it.
http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3238
No need to re-do the battery steps, just the memory stick part.
There is also a recovery folder available, this worked to downgrade 3.52 M33 and below, not sure if it works with 3.71 M33.

nope this won't bring you back to 1.5
your 150.PBP (be sure to name it 150.PBP) and put it at the root, or "ms0:/"
Or maybe you have a corrupted PBP in your hands.

Hi guys...I recently bought a white PSP with a 2gb memo and it has a 3.40 OE-A firmware
I have a few questions...
1.I don't have a AC adapter(therefore I cannot upgrade with Pandora battery)
2.I s there another way to do the upgrade(is this the way posted on the sticky topics) without Pandora(it is to complicated for me to upgrade with Pandora)
3.If there is a way can you please direct me to the threads or give me a manual step by step how to do this...
Help a guy...I never done this and this is my first encounter with a PSP...
Acerthief

1) get one. Recommended.
2) of course you can update to 3.71M33 without pandora.
First, upgrade to 3.52M33 (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=2732), and then add the Update-4 (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3185&highlight=m33+update) patch,
then upgrade with this guide you're posting.
After that, add the Update-2 patch (http://exophase.com/files/psp/m33update2.rar) and the 1.5Kernel-Addon (http://exophase.com/files/psp/150kernel_addon2.rar).
3) Answered above. :D

but it must be done...I heard rumors about Survival packages that goes for a small amount...I think there's an AC adapter in it...
Yeah another Question is this 1.5 kernel necesary...Isn't his only purpose running homebrew programs(forgive me if this sounds stupid,I am beginer)

custom firmwares (like 3.40OE) before on phat PSP are 1.5 kernel based, so i would recommend letting the custom firmware on phat PSPs the "normal" stats, which is, having the 1.5 kernel.XD
Saves a lot of time on homebrew users, like me ;)

I found this on QJnet. Dark Alex has just released the newest updates to 3.71 M33; which brings us to 3.71 M33-3 (http://www.qj.net/Dark-AleX-releases-CFW-3-71-M33-3-PopsLoader/pg/49/aid/107198)
What's changed or improved:
- Fixed a bug in access to flash by usb.
- HEN core: kernel prx's with syscall exports work again.
- PSP Slim: programmers can set the size of user memory to 52 MB by using a sfo flag.
Check sample in sdk for usage.
- March33 NO-UMD driver:
* Fixed a bug that could hang the psp when exiting with home.
* Fixed compatibility issue with Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles, and maybe more games.
- Vshmenu: it wasn't displaying properly with psp slim TV-OUT due to the change of resolution. Fixed.
New & improved Popsloader!
Support for 3.71 and 3.72 pops has been added. Note that 3.71 however will not appear in the list in 3.71 M33 as it is not necessary.
There is an "Easy Installer" for 3.71 M33 (http://pspupdates.qj.net/3-71-M33-Easy-Installer-install-CFWs-the-easy-way/pg/49/aid/103185), but it doesn't seem to work on computers running Windows XP. You'll need to be running Vista. I've no idea if it works on Mac computers.

The 1.50 kernel addon cannot be installed on a Slim...
Anyways nearly all homebrew is now written for the 3.X kernel so there isn't much need for 1.5. Though eLoader will run most of the older PSP applications that were written for 1.5.

Despertar del Cementerio is essentially an unbricker for all PSP units. A guide for setting it up can be found here...

Kernel 1.50 add-on is only for regular PSPs, cannot be installed on PSP Slim. It improves compatibility with older homebrew.

Are you sure you need to use popsloader? You don't need it to run PSone games, only to run older versions of the emulator. Generally I've found the 3.71 pops to work fine with most games.

did you set the GAME folder kernel to 3.52?
cause if you set it to 1.5 to updater will think that the system is 1.5 not 3.52.

I just want to say that after reading this long post, the one for the 3.52, the one for the key cleaner and some other i was able to upgrade my 3.40oe without any problems.
This forum and you guys rock!!! thanks a lot for the "indirect" support, i wish i can return it somewhere somehow! ;)
btw, i would add something at the initial instructions of this step about keys, i find out what i needed to do and what was it because i read all the thread, but people dont do that often (can“t believe how many people asked the same here over and over) ;)

Yes, Pandora's battery (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780) will let to revert back to 3.71 M33. You need a PSP running custom firmware to convert the battery and install the memory stick files though.

You'll need a "Custom Firmware". In this case, 3.71M33. but you're only way is to use a Pandora Battery and a magic memory stick. The guide to make it is stickied in FAQ and Guides Section.

Turn off your PSP completely (holding on to the power button up for 10 seconds)
Hold R button and turn on, You'll be in the Recovery menu.
Choose "Configuration". (Press X to go in)
and You'll see the "Set GAME folder kernel", press X to change it into 3.52.
Last, choose BACK, and then EXIT.

You probably have a hard downed PSP. Meaning, it was downgraded by hardware not software. The Sony updater does not seem to run correctly on these PSPs so I think you will need to use the Pandora battery method to get to 3.71 M33:

You need the 1.50 update (150.PBP) placed on the memory stick root (X:/)

It's not included in the kernel pack, you need to download it separately.

You'll need a phat PSP battery in order to make it.
Bricking means that you're psp doesn't work when you turn it on, which makes it like a brick. that's why we called it bricking.

Please could you add to both the 3.52M33 & 3.71M33 guides that we can jump from 3.52M33-1 to version 4, and same with 3.71M33-1 to 3.71M33-4. Some people are naive and go through each update/patch (version 2, version 3, version 4).
Also, please can you also add instructions on how to install the 1.50 ADD-ON plus how to get POPs working (to play PSX games again).
Many thanks

HERE (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=1504) are the latest firmware install guides and update/ patches.
As 1.5 Add-on, just Copy the "UPDATE" folder to ms0:/PSP/GAME. Run it on your PSP.
I'm not sure of POPs though, never got time to check it out, as I myself have no PSX games and have no intention downloading pirated ones.

sorry please ignore....I found answer to my question. I hadn't set the it to the 3.52 kernel in the recovery console.
Thanks anyway. great work all those involved!!!!!!!!!!

I've got a phat psp ta-082....I upgraded to 3.51m33 then ran keycleaner 1.4 as I couldn't connect to ps3. this worked but then it said I needed a newer version of firmware on the psp.
So tonight I've upgraded to 3.52m33 and then 3.52m33-4 using guides on this site.
I've now tried to follow this guide to get 3.71 but I get the error:
'this program requires 3.52 m33-4 or higher.'
This obviously doesn't make much sense as I have 3.52 m33-4 (it even says it under system info.)
as per the guide I've put the update folder under psp/game then put the 371.pbp into the update folder (this file is 23,094 big). oh and the battery is 100% charged and plugged in...
can someone please tell me where I'm going wrong.
Cheers

No, you need to install 3.52 M33 first. Once it's installed, apply the 3.52 M33-4 update (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3185).
Then you'll be ready to upgrade to 3.71 M33.

Wrong thread for this but yes you can downgrade 3.90 by following this guide:
http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780
There is one catch though - you will need another PSP running custom firmware to complete most of the steps in that guide. So hopefully you know someone running custom firmware who will convert the battery and install the required memory stick files for you.
