View Full Version : GRUB installed with error

I installed ubuntu 7.10 with a live update CD,
because I installed "e17" which will "lock" the update from GNOME, making it with error.

But somehow the computer died while installing and setting GRUB, after formatting a drive especially for linux, and all the standard stuff.

I had to reboot the computer, and the GRUB fails loading, meaning that i'm stuck on the mobo screen.

Everythings is still there, but is there a way to uninstall GRUB with live CD or anything?
I'm planning to stop using Linux for a while since my dad needed that extra 20GB from linux for his work >_>.

I posted in the unbuntu forums, bumped like four time and i still get nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.

well the thing is that my Live CD is dead.
i downloaded the ISO, mounted into a cd and tried.
Somehow my CD reader rejects the live CD. six of them, mounted by three different computers.

what happens when you boot the comp with the Live CD in it?....
does it say something like "press any key to boot from CD" or does it go straight to GRUB?
do you actually want ubuntu on it or were you looking to take ubuntu and GRUB off?

just had a wee search and you should be able to remove GRUB by using FIXMBR in a recovery console....you can get to it using a windows install disc.not sure what button or when it shows up on the install disc but i do remember using it before to fix a friends XP setup before

if you fix that then you should be able to boot to XP...i think....

aite i'll search it up.

my live CD can boot to the menu, but when i press "enter live CD", it reads for a while and comes back saying "Error I/O CD" and asks to reboot.

I found this:
http://www.wikihow.com/Uninstall-the-Grub-Bootloader-from-a-Dual-Boot-XP-System-With-an-XP-CD

i think i can do it, but i'm not sure with the
fixboot and fixmbr command.

another thing is i don't have a administrator password (my XP only has one user.)
so it'll just skip it i suppose?

Thanks in Advance,
and +rep for MI :D

EDIT: i just slipped my XP CD and let it ran, when it was ready to go, i found out there's no option for "Recovery Console".......
