Okay I'm planning to get a computer soon
These are specs I know I'm having.
Intel Core2 Quad
500GB HDD
4GB DDR2 RAM
DVD+-RW *2
ViewSonic 19" *2 (Yes I'm going for Dual Monitor)
Still looking for a nice Gfx card, something that can play bioshock, crysis, etc, smoothly. I have had enough with the onboard one. Any ideas people? oh Yes and it has to be dual monitor compatible.

i wouldn't worry about the card having dual outputs since pretty much all cards now come with that.
if you're looking for something to handle crysis and moneys no problem then a 8800 ultra would be a good bet from what i can remember. i think there was a new 9 series released recently by nvidia but i haven't seen any benchmarks or reviews for any of them yet.
EDIT: just took a wee look on tomshardware.com and tbh,the higher end nvidia 9800 GX2 or GTX isn't worth the money it seems.ah well

The 9600GT will handle all those games at high and retails for around $169.
http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/02/21/nvidia_geforce_9600_gt/page12.html
The 8800GT is a bit better (10FPS difference usually) but will cost around $200.

instead of getting a dual screen you should just invest in getting a bigger monitor. I had dual for awhile and it wasn't anything great. Which is why i just got a 22" wide screen ( wish i had gotten a 24 in widescreen ) .

I think dual monitors on the way to go personally, you can always use the second monitor for something else (gaming consoles). Also dual monitors probably serves his purposes better
MenaceInc
04-07-2008, 10:41 PM
i would go duel monitor too.
more flexible than just one large monitor and cheaper too.
and using it as an alternate screen is good too since you could have it hooked up to a 360/whatever (i know that was mentioned before).

Yup, I get what you mean daveycockit.
I WAS going to get a 24" widescreen myself, but now i'm currently using a ViewSonic 19" that's only a few months old.
Basically what I'm aiming for is coding wholescreen on one monitor while i can do other stuff on the other window.
daveycockit
04-12-2008, 05:05 PM
having a dual monitor is definitely useful when you are coding and testing at the same time. I myself never really used the 2nd monitor all that much.. but then again at the time they were 2 different sizes so it was annoying.
Scratch that... get a projector!

640GB SATA drive at *maybe* 12000rpm (or 10000 I totally can't remember)
Some crazy mobo I guess
nVidia 9800GTX muHAHAHAHAHAH
19" ViewSonic Widescreen*2 (Dual-Monitor BABY)
Some xtreme sound card. Dunno where to start. Any advice?
Logitech Extreme Gamer Keyboard Set (+Mouse)
Liquid cool I suppose.
I have... around 60000NTD (1USD:32NTD, you do the math) to build it. Pretty much enough for everything. LOL.
Anyways.....
Haven't seen you in a while bwalker!

Hey unless you plan on doing some crazy overclocking dont get the qx series cpu's waste of money. You could hit almost 4.? with it if you wanted but if you dont plan on pushing it its a waste a q6600 or 6700 will get you to 3.2 easy and probably further i can get mine to 3.6 on air. Also do not get the 9800gtx thats only a mid ranged card right now. I would reccomend either a hd 4870crossfire or a gtx280(although not worth the price in my opinion). Also the 4870x2 comes out soon which may very well be faster then the gtx280 and cheaper. And get dual 22" the resolution increase will make you very happy :)

My dad has to edit his films and works on my computer, so I'll need to overclock it maybe near 4.0Ghz. Cooling system is not a problem, cause I got the $$ lol (Which means no trip to Canada WTF).
And I'm curious whether Ati gfx cards works with intel cpus better or AMD. (Intel fan here).
I guess I'll check out gtx280 when I get the time to do so lol.

A q6600 at stock would be plenty of power to edit films and graphics. As far as video cards and card works with any company and if you want to stay intel and go multi gpu ati is your only choice. However at is the best bang for you buck witht he 4850 and 4870. Get the q9450 hit 3.2-4ghz with it (depends on chip) save a shit load of money. It really is unnecesary. The 2.4 q6600 would outperform any dual core regardless of speed with video editiing since the good programs are multi threaded and will use all for cores.
i dont know if the is against terms and if it is delete it.
Try going here and asking for help picking your parts. There are a lot of people on there that do that video editing stuff for a living and they know more about ocmputers than i could ever hope. Everything i learned i learned from there (well a alot). Its called overclock.net

Okay man thanks for helping.
So I guess you suggest q6600 or q9450? (Sorry my bad, english getting worse and had a tired day looool)

If you have a high performance overclockers MOBO then get the q6600.
You can easily be sailing at 3.2 Ghz with practically no effort at all.

get the q9450 it has bigger cache and it runs cooler and on less volts. It is also a tad faster clock for clock. It will hit 3.2 easy with a good air cooler.

It's also $130 more expensive over the q6600 according to the egg and most wouldn't know the difference.

LOL two people with two different choices XD
well i'll leave you two to fight.
I think I have some extra hard cold cash for a q9450 though.
Another thing is the motherboard. Now I have 0% knowledge on that (been on the overclock.net flipping through threads for an entire afternoon, no hope XD)
What should I pay attention on when I'm choosing the motherboard?
EDIT:
Okay final decision:
Intel Core2 Quad q9450 overclock it up to 3.2Ghz~4.0Ghz hopefully
nVidia GTX 280
Kingston DDR2 RAM 4GB
Seagate SATA 2*640GB HDD
Gastby EXtreme sticky hairgel LOL
ViewSonic 19" Dual monitor
That's about it.

overclock.net is a good site but I prefer http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/index.php
As far as mobo it seems by your selection in hardware, you have alot of money to throw at this build, so I suggest the
ASUS MAXIMUS EXTREME LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard
But for this board you will need DDR3 RAM
If you wanna stick with DDR2 then I suggest
ASUS P5Q Deluxe LGA 775 Intel P45 Intel Motherboard
Anyway for good info check out extremesystems.org
have fun with the build thats the most important part.

Aite went to the computer store and checked it out my spec.
Too fcking expensive.
Did another round of research and came out with this one:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Transcand DDR2 1066 RAM 4GB
Gigabyte GA-P35-S3 Mobo
Ati 4870 512mb
hopefully I'll cut down a lotta money. But I dunno. I'm over with the overclocking thing. (Well acutally my dad forbid me to do so, so yeh).

@acerthief: don't buy that ATI, my dad bought it and it made the PC Restart with every 3D game!
anyways, got me an Asus EN9600GT now :)
current specs:
Intel Dual Core 3.4 (Oc'd to 3.6)
Asus EN9600GT (Oc'd from 600 to 787 and memory to 1032Mhz)
71557156
Asrock Motherboard MiniATX (Don't remember which)
2x1GB RAM Kingston Dual Channeled
120GB Sata2 HD @ 7500RPM
I can now play games like cod4 and MOHA all details at max (1280x1024 @ 60+Fps)
:D

While the 9600gt is a solid card i would not reccomend it. It handles those resolutions quite nicely but it wont handle 1680x1050 to well. So pretty much you need to pick a card based on what you will be playing and at what resolution. Up to 1680x1050 i would reccomend a 4850 as it kills what nvidia has in that price range now. For higher resolutions or even 1680x1050 the 4870 is the best bang for the buck. The nvidia cards are still in an akward price point. They are still more expensive then ati but dont offer enough of a performance gain for the money. The 4850 is hands down the best value right now by far.
I am not saying ati is better just that their cards a priced better for the performance. Unless your looking for the absolute best or currently have a sli motherboard i could not in good faith reccomend paying more when it is unneeded.
Also @Darkchild one bad card does not mean the whole series is bad. The cards especially the 4870 is a monster for its price. I have 2 of them (why i dont know my cpu bottlenecks them at 3.6Ghz) and not one problem.

@bwalker: So far I've had problems with all cards.
Radeon 9600 Pro: VPU Recover all the time
the 4870 restart thing with my dad...
I dunno... xD I don't trust ati now xD
Nvidia never gave me any problems, not even on linux :P

That actually sounds like a power issue. The 4870 is power hungry and the PSU your dad has maybe wasn't up to par. By comparison the 9600GT uses MUCH less power, but it is also weaker -- as bwalker said, it's not a card for 1680x1050 gaming. For 1280x1024 it's perfect though.
I know someone that designs GPUs at ATI and he says they've been really happy with how the 4xxx series turned out. So I'm planning on getting the 4850 soon. Would go for the 4870 but it will definitely bottleneck my CPU.

I'm going to assume you mean your cpu will bottleneck the card lol. You will love the 4850 just make sure you do the fan speed fix otherwise the temps get really high becuase auto fanspeed doesnt work. I can tell you how to do it when/if you get the card.

still plenty for todays games that coupled witha 4850 you would be able to play any game fine most on max at1680x1050 except of course crysis which no card can max yet.
