View Full Version : 3.90 M33 Install Guide

Here is a step by step guide for installing the newly released 3.90 M33. Please note that you must be running 3.52 M33-3, or higher to begin this installation. Do note that if you're already running 3.80 M33 and have a WiFi connection, you can simply update to 3.90 M33 by selecting Network Update from the PSP XMB.

Installation Guide

First grab the 3.90 M33 files (http://exophase.com/files/psp/390m33.rar) and extract them.

1. Copy the UPDATE folder contained in the archive to X:/PSP/GAME

2. Download the 3.90 EBOOT (http://exophase.com/files/psp/390.PBP), and then place it in X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE

3. Navigate to the Game menu on the PSP and execute the program, it will not run unless there is 78 percent battery free.

4. Press X and the update process will start. Yes it may look similar to a regular Sony update but don't worry!

5. Once finished, the updater will ask you to press X or O to reboot. You MUST do this, otherwise you'll end up with a brick.

6. You've successfully installed 3.90 M33!.

Cause one of my friend after update to the official firmware, it doesnt appear skype option.

Sony have disabled the Skype function for Japan region units, since the microphones aren't available there yet.

But custom firmware has an option to change region in the recovery menu, so that may work.

Mine PSP is 2000 japan as well.
Which means if i want to use skype, i just have to change the region to other country, then the skype will be available? I just bought my PSP Slim and feel sad when Sony announced that japan model not supported with skype:(

Yes it should work. Can't tell you for sure since I don't have a Japanese unit. But if I change my region to Japan, then the Skype icon goes away. So that's likely the only setting preventing it from showing.

U mean u want to format after update to 3.90m33?
Hold R when u boot up your psp, then simply go to advance > format flash1 and reset, wait for a while then everything will be reset.

No he meant that if he bricks it he want to reflash it. I have no idea, but try downgrade to 1.5 (WARNING!!: Change your language to ENGLISH before downgrade, or it'll be brick anyway when downgraded)then update to 3.52 M33 then a patch. After that you can upgrade to 3.90 M33 again. If you use pandora you don't have to worry about changing the language.

pspknightx
02-02-2008, 03:51 AM
But if you are PSP slim, do not downgrade to 1.5 as Slim doesnt have 1.5 kernel (future time maybe, if Tima Machine by DA complete :P). Use pandora v4 to update to 3.80m33-5 and upgrade to 3.90m33.

If you hold R during bootup and enter the configuration mode "Use M33 Network Update" should be enabled. What this does is download the latest M33 update from dark-alex.org when you select the Network Update option.

You can create a Pandora battery on 3.80 M33-5. Here's a guide on how to do it:

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780

Though I recommend you buy an extra battery just for Pandora, so that you can always restore your PSP's firmware if something goes wrong.

No, all it does is install some files to your memory stick. So, after you create a Pandora, the files can stay on there and you can continue using the MS as normal.

erm. gt a problem installing the new firmware. stuck at the pls wait screen. any idea why? using a 3.52m33-4 psp phat now. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Problem solved.
Just want to share the simple solution with the bros out here.

Go to Recovery mode and revert your kernel to 3.XX where X is the custom firmware you’re currently on. Example, if you’re using 3.71 M33-4 and you set your kernel to 1.50, it won’t upgrade unless you set it back to 3.71 kernel.

Only Europe region can see the GO!Messenger. Go to Recovery mode, then configuration, press the region until "Eur", after that press back > Exit.
Back to XMB and go to Internet, you should see the icon of GO!Messenger there.

What type of PSP you are using? Slim or Phat? Maybe the emulator you are using can only be used under 1.50 kernel. You have to download the latest emulator which can be run under 3.xx kernel. Plus, PSP Slim cannot use 1.50. (In my knowledge :P)

Hi,

When trying to upgrade my Fat from 3.80 M33-5 (first through network update or afterwards via the starter on the memory stick) I get the following error:
The system configuration of this PSP system does not appear to be correct. The update cannot be completed. Contact tehnical support for assistance. (DRNFFFFFFB0)

I have already reset my PSP and tried it again, but it still didn't work.
The PSP is set to the 3.80 kernel.

You have a TA-086 mobo, and you're missing key8 (aka brightness key). You'll need to find it off the net for one and put it back in with "IDStorage Manager. Or else the key issue will always be there.

As for 390.PBP, either re-download again, or sadly you have a faulty memory stick.

Will need to use Pandora to install custom firmware if you're on official 3.80.

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780

But creating the battery, installing memory stick files, requires a PSP already running custom firmware. So you'll need to find someone with custom firmware that can do this for you.

No you can only start following this guide once you're on custom firmware.

There is a guide on setting up a Pandora battery and magic memory stick here:

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780

You will need another PSP already running custom firmware to complete most of the steps. If you do not know anyone who has a custom firmware PSP then I recommend asking someone over at Noobz (http://forums.noobz.eu/downgrader-support/people-who-can-help-you-unbrickdowngrade-a-psp-using-pandora/0/) to do it for you. There's many people there that will convert your battery and install the memory stick files for free as long as you cover shipping costs.

First I would check to see if your 390.PBP download is corrupted. Make sure it matches the MD5: 64BAE5DD0D0F836BAEDF915FB106E9CC

You can use a program like HashTab (http://beeblebrox.org/hashtab/) to check file MD5s.

If the MD5 matches then the is file ok. Next try formatting the memory stick, then copy all your files back over.

Can you type the complete error message you're getting? I did a search on "checking idstorage destination" and couldn't find anything. I'm guessing it says something different.

I'd also try running Chilly Willy's KeyCleaner and fix up any problems it detects with your idstorage keys.

great. i had 3.52 M33-3 installed and did EXACTLY what the guide says (i use the old psp not slim) and it said: unpacking... done. and for about 15 minutes now it says Please wait...

it cant take THAT long. i think i will have to shut down my psp but yet that really fears me. also the battery level was 83%

edit: alright i COULD restart it and tried it for another time. it didnt even unpack but gave me directly the message "unpacking... done- Please wait..."

Official Firmware Can't run homebrews like this.

You can only use the "Universal Unbricker (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780)" to get you to 3.80M33, then to 3.90M33.

There's a catch though, you need a PSP with custom firmware in order to install the set.

Something may be wrong with your memory stick - try formatting it first and see if that helps if not then you will need to try using a different memory stick.

Also make sure you 3.90 EBOOT download is not corrupted. It should match the file size of 24.4 MB (25,654,469 bytes).

You can purchase and download PSOne games at the official PlayStation Store (http://store.playstation.com/store/index.vm). Or rip your own game discs (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=2047). We don't support piracy here.

Someone who has a Pandora battery and magic memory stick can install custom firmware on your PSP. There are instructions for converting your own battery to Pandora and creating a magic memory stick here (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780) but in order to do that you need to be already running custom firmware.

So if you don't know anyone nearby that has these items there are few people at Noobz.eu (http://forums.noobz.eu/downgrader-support/people-who-can-help-you-unbrickdowngrade-a-psp-using-pandora/0/) who can install custom firmware on your PSP for free. You'll just need to cover shipping costs.

Sorry I made a mistake its not destination but "degeneration". I also don't know how many 0's it is. Thanks for going through the trouble for this, much appreciated.

Run KeyCleaner (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=1238) and fix any keys it finds problems with. That should fix the problem.

I will warn you though, there is always a small chance of bricking when making changes to the idstorage. Depending on how corrupt your idstorage is, the brick may not be recoverable even with Pandora.

This just wont do the trick for me and I don't know why.
-I have a normal/old PSP.
-SanDisk Memory Stick PRODuo 4.0 GB (I formatted it)
-I am on 3.52 M33-3
-Battery is 85%
-System language is English

So I put the whole UPDATE folder containing EBOOT.PBP inside X:/PSP/GAME. I also put 390.PBP inside the update folder.

Then I try to run it and it says unpacking for 1 second. After that it tells me to wait and nothing happens (I gave up after 20 minutes).

-Did I do ANYTHING wrong?
-Is there some other firwmare I could update to first and then try to install it?
-Or can I downgrade to some other firmware again and then try to update to the latest firmware that isnt M33 though?
-Any idea what I can do so I can install 3.90 M33?

thanks a lot

This is a bit different. You have to upgrade to 3.52M33 (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=2732) first, then update the 3.52M33-4 Patch (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3185). And then upgrade to 3.90M33 with this guide, along with the 3.90M33-2 Patch (http://exophase.com/files/psp/390m33_2.rar) and the 1.5 Kernel Patch (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=5634).

Yes your PSP is bricked. Someone with a Pandora battery will have to try restoring your PSP. Well you could do it yourself if you buy a pre-converted battery or by hard modding the one you currently have. You'd also need a memory stick reader to copy the Pandora files to your memory stick.

I read the installer readme on this forum, when I tried to execute the file, it said "game could not be started"

Would this be because I only have 50% battery (I'm charging)?

Or is it because the file is corrupt

I read that I need 78% but that's not the error I would assume to expect :x

What firmware is your PSP currently running? Hold R when booting up your PSP and make sure the GAME folder kernel is set to 3.X.

And, yeah, the battery needs to be around 78 % charged, but that's not what this error is referring to.

These app downloaded here are called "homebrew", which sadly, doesn't run on Official Firmware.

There's a guide that teaches you to use "The universal unbricker" to take you to 3.90M33-3 directly, but you'll need a PSP with custom firmware already to install the set for you.

Do new saves work? If so, the saves that aren't working are definitely corrupted. I think it is due to a saving bug in 3.40 OE and DevHook.

There's no way to convert saves, but you could install TimeMachine to load the hybrid 1.50 + 3.40 firmware. Your old saves should work in that.

There's instructions on how to install it in the 1.5 kernel release thread:

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=5634

As for PSPTube, download it here (http://exophase.com/files/psp/PSPTube20080127.zip), extract the archive, then copy over the "PSPTube" folder to X:/PSP/GAME on your memory stick. The application should now show up in your Game menu.

Perhaps flOw requires a firmware higher than 3.71 M33, not sure. But to answer your question, there is no harm in updating.

You have to buy the original UMD. It's illegal if you don't.

After dusting off my PSP, I got myself from way-back and up to 3.52 M33 using x3sphere's sticky'd guide [http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=2732].

Proceeding immediately to the next stage, I headed to x3sphere's 3.90 M33 post, where I'm informed I need 3.52 M33-3.

I went through both posts again, looking for info on stepping up from 3.52 M33 to 3.52 M33-3 so I can make the final leap up to 3.90 M33. I swear I didn't find a thing, and I guess I'm not surprised, as right now, my brain is bleeding from a lethal intake of version-reading-itis and I can no longer discern number and letter combinations from complete jibberish.

I wonder if someone might be kind enough to direct me to:

3.52 M33 -> 3.52 M33-3 directions/information

I would humbly suggest that x3sphere's otherwise-excellent guide for 3.52 M33 be updated at the top to reflect an incremental tweak to M33-3 (or M33-4, as I've seen referenced).

Thanks much for your time.

Download the 3.52M33-4 (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3185) Patch.

Extract the archive, go into the PSP folder and the GAME150 folder untill you see a folder named M33Update4.

Copy the M33Update4 folder to ms0:/PSP/GAME150.
Execute the program and BOOM! you've got it:D

Now change the game folder kernel to 3.52 and proceed with the 3.90M33 update.

Has to be a memory stick issue then. I'd backup all data then format it via the PSP.

See if formatting flash1 via Recovery menu fixes it. And if that doesn't work try renaming the files to *.iso instead of *.cso.

If you go into Recovery mode by holding R while booting your PSP there's an option to format flash1 under the "Advanced" menu.

Then my guess is that the CSO files you have somehow got corrupted and the PSP isn't reading them anymore. You'll have to redump the games.

My fat PSP was upgraded with firmware 3.90 via the upgrade version in my PSP and now it won't able to detect any ISO/CSO formatted games in the memory stick. I've been searching for a thread within this website and found out that some of the features mentioned e.g. press SELECT key to enter the homebrew selection menu or cold starting PSP by holding R key, there's nothing happen.

Appreciate if anyone able to assist here. This is my nephew's PSP (6 years old) and I've promised him that it will be fixed by this weekend!

Need advices so badly here...

So what firmware are you running currently? Official firmware 3.90 cannot run ISO or CSO.

The big step from 3.40 OE-A was a downgrade back to 1.50 then back up to 3.52 M33-1.

Once we have 3.52M33-1 we needed to jump to 3.52M33-4, then 3.71 M33-1, then 3.71-4.

1. Will this always be the same pattern? We have to update to X.XXM33-1 then X.XXM33-Y where X.XX is some new version, and Y is any sub-version..?

x3sphere, I love your Install Guides since 3.40 OE-A. They have all been very short & easy.

2. What you do miss out is the confusion of the 1.50 kernel addon. Is this compulsory if we want to run homebrew in the GAME150 folder?

3. If I installed 3.71M33-1 then installed the 1.50 kernel addon. Then I install 3.71M33-4 (at a later date) will this override the 1.50 kernel addon?

No, just for anything below 3.71 M33, as 3.52 M33-3 an onward fixed a bug in the upgrading process.

2. What you do miss out is the confusion of the 1.50 kernel addon. Is this compulsory if we want to run homebrew in the GAME150 folder?

Yes. Homebrew in GAME150 or any application based on the 1.5 kernel won't run unless it is installed.

3. If I installed 3.71M33-1 then installed the 1.50 kernel addon. Then I install 3.71M33-4 (at a later date) will this override the 1.50 kernel addon?

No, the 1.5 kernel addon will stay intact. Performing a major upgrade, i.e. 3.71 M33 to 3.90 M33 would erase the add-on, and you'd have to reinstall it in that case.
