linux on ps3

i want to install Ferrox v1.0 on my ps3, all i wnated to know first was

1. how safe is it to install linux onto the ps3? any chance of bricking it?
2. if i download it can i put it on any blank disk? like the ones i use to backup my dvds?

Well, the disc has to be a dvd unless you go through some 'minor' hurdles to install it via a CD..tuts for that are around the net..
