Here is a detailed step by step guide for installing the newly released 4.01 M33. Please note that you must be running 3.52 M33-3, or higher to begin this installation. Do note that if you're already running 3.80 M33 and have a WiFi connection, you can simply update to 3.90 M33 by selecting Network Update from the PSP XMB.
Installing 4.01 M33
First grab the 4.01 M33 files (http://exophase.com/files/psp/401M33.rar) and extract them.
1. Copy the UPDATE folder contained in the archive to X:/PSP/GAME
2. Download the 4.01 EBOOT (http://exophase.com/files/psp/401.PBP), and then place it in X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE
3. Navigate to the Game menu on the PSP and execute the program, it will not run unless there is 78 percent battery free.
4. Press X and the update process will start. Yes it may look similar to a regular Sony update but don't worry!
5. Once finished, the updater will ask you to press X or O to reboot. You MUST do this, otherwise you'll end up with a brick.
6. You've successfully installed 4.01 M33!
Upgrading to 4.01 M33-2
After installing 4.01 M33, it is recommended to apply the latest update for additional bug fixes and related firmware improvements. Below is a quick three step walkthrough on how to manually update the firmware. Please note that you must have already installed 4.01 M33, as detailed above, in order to begin this process.
1. Download the 4.01 M33-2 update files (http://exophase.com/files/psp/401M33-2.rar) and extract the archive.
2. Copy the UPDATE folder contained in the archive to X:/PSP/GAME, where X is the letter of your memory stick drive. If asked to overwrite any files, do so.
3. Navigate to the Game menu on the PSP and execute the 4.01 M33-2 update program. Then follow the on-screen instructions to update your firmware.
wow! a new custom firmware. thanks DAX, team m33 and x3 :)

Yeah you definitely have a lot of faulty keys... but if there is no problem on 3.80 M33 it might be better to just let them be. Also upgrading to 4.01 M33 shouldn't be a problem, although I would recommend creating a Pandora setup just in case, so you can revert back to a previous firmware if there are any issues.

You'll need to first install 3.52 M33 (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=2732), then upgrade to 3.52 M33-3 (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3185). Once that's done you can install 4.01 M33.

Just follow the above instructions, it will work fine. I haven't personally tested it - but reading over at PSPGEN, a few folks upgraded from 3.95 GEN-2 to 4.01 M33 successfully.

No, the fatms driver is still slow in 4.01 M33. The previously released patch won't work either.

x3sphere, this is interesting, i flashed 4.01 M33 and tested for the speed for ISO and CSO, it went pretty fast. I can't test it with USB2.0 because my laptop sent for replacement. Althought im thinking is my memory stick that didn't affect the speed.
First Theory:
I reliase when transferring data to PSP using USB1.0 the MS light went fast blinking. And before it was slow blink before 4.01. Meaning the data is being written on MS full speed via USB1.0. So USB2.0 won't go any faster?
Second Theory:
I full formatted my MS on PSP with windows format tool and ran scan disk then format agian on PSP. I heard this way can also fix the MS slow down issue. Im suggesting everyone try that.

The PSP's USB speed is capped to around 6MB/s or so. USB 2.0 can transfer files at much faster rates, but the PSP can only read in data that fast. You would have to use a card reader to get the full speed out of your memory stick.
But anyways, yeah, running scan disk and formatting the memory stick can fix some issues, especially if you have corrupt sectors on the stick. I personally haven't noticed any slowdown while running PSP titles off my 2GB SanDisk, such as God of War and Crisis Core. I think the problem is more prevalent with other MS brands, like Sony and Lexar.

I'm on 3.52 M33-4.
I've copied the 401 files as instructed and run the '4.01 M33' item from the memorystick 'game' menu. The app starts, screen goes black, it says 'Unpacking... done.' then 'Please wait...'.
Then it just sits at 'Please wait...'. I've left it for over half an hour, it just sits there.
A reboot beings it back into the 3.52 M33-4 XMB.
Is there anything else I need to do to get to 401 from 3.52 M33-4?

Backup anything you have on the memory stick that is important (game saves etc), and format the stick on your PSP.
Now give it another try.
If this still doesn't work, then You'll need to see this thread HERE (http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=1035) and check if you have a faulty memory stick.

Oh.
The 4gb Sony memorystick I've been using is 'magicgate unknown', so that'll be a fake then.
I have a 2gb one which shows up the same and shows the same problem.
I tried with another one, a Sandisk one which came in the box with a SE phone (from Vodafone, not eBay) and says 'Magicgate supported'.
Exactly the same problem with that one too.
I would have installed M33 3.52 - and earlier versions - using one of these, and just ran the update to 3.52 M33-4 fine.
For all of them the 'unpacking...' bit appears to have worked as there are now other files in the psp/game/update folder.
Does the 401 installer verify that the memorycard is a proper Sony one and stop at this point if it is not?
If so, would it think the 'Magicgate supported' Sandisk is OK?
EDIT: I've tried formatting them all, same result...

To flash to 4.01 M33 you're required to have ATLEAST 3.71 M33-2 or higher firmware. Anything lower then 3.71 M33-2 will not flash properly. That occours to some of you here.

I had this same problem. I solved it by doing a hard reboot, holding down R, booting up the recovery menu. Go to configuration, and change the game folder homebrew from 1.5 to 3.xx. It worked for me after that, hope it does for you as well.
Aha!
Yes that's done it, thanks muchly!

To flash to 4.01 M33 you're required to have ATLEAST 3.71 M33-2 or higher firmware. Anything lower then 3.71 M33-2 will not flash properly. That occours to some of you here.
I just updated from 3.52 M33-4 to 4.01... turns out the problem was a recovery menu setting, I had the game folder set to 1.5 not 3.52. Having changed that it installed and seems fine.

OK I've got a regular 3.95 install and I've got both the 4.01 M33 and EBOOT files in /psp/games/update but I get the error "Unable to start game"
Any ideas how I can get it to upgrade to this new M33 version? Tried reformatting the card as well, and have it hooked up to a power supply.

This Installation guide doesn't work in PSP with 4.01 OFW. I have tried pandorized my battery but it needs to be 3.50 or higher, also must be homebrew 3.xx. Since some of us updated our psp to 4.01 by accident we are totally locked up. Please is there any guide to make our 4.01 OFW to be 4.01 m33 please post the link in here.

Here's the guide to update your PSP 3.40OE to 3.52m33,
http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=2732
After that, grab this file and update your 3.52m33 to 4th update (extract out the UPDATE folder and put in under x:/PSP/GAME and run it)
http://exophase.com/files/psp/M33-1234.zip
Then, you should be able to follow the "4.01 M33 Easy Installation Guide" since you have then minimum requirement of 3.52m33-4 firmware.
OK I've got a regular 3.95 install and I've got both the 4.01 M33 and EBOOT files in /psp/games/update but I get the error "Unable to start game"

Because you are having the Official Firmware 3.95, so the only way to upgrade to M33 version is by using pandora battery and magic MS. Try to find some friend who owns CFW PSP and help you to pandorize.

Yes you'll need to use a Pandora battery and magic memory stick. There's no way to convert the battery on official firmware, though, so you'll need to either purchase a pre-converted battery or have someone with CFW convert it for you.

No the 1.5 add-on is entirely optional, though it will increase compatibility with older homebrew applications. Remember it is only for the regular fat PSP models though.

It is highly recommended to create a Pandora setup, since with it you'll be able to restore your PSP in case of a brick (there is always the slight chance of bricking when writing to the PSP's flash memory). But to answer your question, no you don't need a magic memory stick or Pandora battery to install 4.01 M33.

By default it is set to use the M33 network update.
Go into recovery mode (hold R while booting) to check. There's an option in configuration called Use M33 network update. Should be enabled by default.

just updated my psp to 4.01 m33-2.
is it also applicable to psp fat?

With 3.50 you have two options. Either downgrade to 1.5 using the game Lumines (the original not the sequel) or use a Pandora battery and magic memory stick.

My PSP was running 3.80 M33. I went into the network update and I ended up with the official firmware 4.01... Can anyone help me out?, Why didn't it work like it says up there?...And is there any way of fixing this now or do I have to get my PSP remodded?..
Thanks

Hello
I successfully installed 4.01 M33 and upgraded to M33-2 (From 3.71 M33-4)
There was a problem with some of the games I had, I couldn't start them.
I found out that the ones I had problems were the ones which had file names in CHT.
Changing them solved the problem (With the exception of one, which had said that the save data was corrupted and I had to start over again --0).
I was wondering though... they worked fine in 3.71 M33-4, how come they were not able to be read after updating?

Might be a bug in the firmware, in regards to how it is handling CHT based characters. I don't believe any of the changes made in the M33 firmware would have caused that though. More than likely this happened due to a change Sony made.

Most likely the game you are trying to run is not compatible in 4.01. With each new firmware release Sony usually makes changes to the PSone emulator, breaking (and fixing) certain games in the process.
D_A plans to release a 4.01 M33 compatible build of popsloader soon, which allows you to run the PSone emulator from earlier firmware on 4.01 M33.

Hiya, having some problems upgrading to 4.01 M33
I've currently got 3.52 M33-4. Which is fine to upgrade from.
However, it shuts down, starts up again, says Unpacking... done. Then goes to Please wait...
And nothing happens? It just stays on that screen.
Worked fine on my little brothers. Just wondering why it isn't working on mine?
Mines an original 1.5 Jap PSP, so should work fine.

Are you using the same memory stick? Either way I would try backing up all data on the stick, format it, then copy everything back over. Sometimes corrupt blocks on the stick can cause this to happen.

Sorted it now.
It was cause I had the wrong kernel selected. Changed it to the firmware i was running, and it upgraded straight away :) Doh, sometimes the most obvious things don't appear obvious at the time :D

I understand that you must be running a previous version to get this update, however I am brand new to this and I don't have any versions running on my PSP. I have update 4.01 from the Sony website and I don't know how to begin, please help me out, thank you! You can either reply to this post or you can email me at jquest_06@yahoo.com, I really appreciate your assistance!

After updating to the new CFW on my phat psp (from like 3.90m33 to 4.01m33) my Snes emulator stopped working and i kept getting this error
"* 80020148 = PRX type unsupported"
Which i did a little research and apparently means:
"Explanation: This error comes up when you try to use emulators, homebrew, etc. on a psp with version 1.52 and higher."
I've tried messing around with the recovery menu and switch the kernel but it didnt seem to do anything, and it worked fine before the update....
So basically i want to know how to fix it, any and all help would be appreciated.ty 8)

@ saDdy: it's already posted below your post.
anyway download Sony's OFW 4.01 then rename the eboot to 401.pbp then get
DA's CFW 4.01 m33-2 and extract it. get the UPDATE folder then copy it to ms0:/PSP/GAME
so you should have a ms0:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE (update folder contains eboot.pbp of CFW 4.01 m33-2)
place the 401.pbp inside the UPDATE folder now you have two files inside ms0:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE
(update folder contains eboot.pbp of CFW 4.01 m33-2 & 401.pbp)
then in the XMB execute the M33-2 update (just follow the succeeding instructions)

Hi MKH,
First of all i think you miss this at 1st page; you'll need to have a psp that's on custom firm ware(CFW).
(Here is a detailed step by step guide for installing the newly released 4.01 M33. Please note that you must be running 3.52 M33-3, or higher to begin this installation. I believe you are still on OFW. Follow this link to create a pandora batt & Magic Memory Stick (MMS) if you have any friends holding on to a custom psp so that you can change your psp from OFW to CFW. 8)

You can install custom firmware on official firmware, but you need a Pandora battery and magic memory stick. Read here for options:

4.01 M33 Easy Installation Guide
Here is a detailed step by step guide for installing the newly released 4.01 M33. Please note that you must be running 3.52 M33-3, or higher to begin this installation. Do note that if you're already running 3.80 M33 and have a WiFi connection, you can simply update to 3.90 M33 by selecting Network Update from the PSP XMB.
Installing 4.01 M33
First grab the 4.01 M33 files and extract them.
1. Copy the UPDATE folder contained in the archive to X:/PSP/GAME
2. Download the 4.01 EBOOT, and then place it in X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE
1. Download the 4.01 M33-2 update files and extract the archive.
2. Copy the UPDATE folder contained in the archive to X:/PSP/GAME, where X is the letter of your memory stick drive. If asked to overwrite any files, do so.
3. Navigate to the Game menu on the PSP and execute the 4.01 M33-2 update program. Then follow the on-screen instructions to update your firmware.
with your guide here, MINE is mine is psp slim 3.71 m33-4, can i just go straight ahead to 4.01m33 ?? or should i go to step by step , go to 3.80 after that 3.90 then to 4.01?
before i proceedd :) . thanks in advance

Hi, I have version 3.90 official sony firmwire (psp slim & lite) and I have have read a lot about custom firmware and how to do it, but my question is how I can update to version 4.01 M33? can I simply download ant install 'PSP Custom Firmware 4.01 M33' or do I have to do other things first?
I am not familiar with this and I would like to do this correctly without bricking my psp or something like that.
A good explanation would be helpful

So, I installed 3.52 M33-3, but when I run the 4.01 installer, it just says
Unpacking... done.
Please wait...
And it doesn't change for like, several minutes. What's wrong? Also, I couldn't install 3.80, 'cus it said I needed 3.52 M33-3 or HIGHER. So, I installed M33-4, and that didn't work either. What's wrong?

Whatever it asks you to press. Unless you have a Japanese PSP, it's probably X.

You're running in OFW (Official Firmware) and ISO folder appears only in CFW (Custom Firmware).
For that you're in CFW use this guide Using The Universal Unbricker To Unbrick / Downgrade / PSP To Restore Any 4.01 M33-2.

You don't need to downgrade, but you can only use the Pandora method because you have a slim. Check the Noobs FAQ for more information.:D

EDIT: hmmm, I upgraded to 3.52 M33-3, then tried to install this... about 30 minutes in, and it says "unpacking....done," and seems to be stuck on "Please wait...."
I put the files into the normal GAME folder instead of the GAME150 folder, as per the intructions... I'm begining to think that perhaps that was a mistake.
What do I do?

I figured it out, I think. Hold R as the PSP is booting up, then go to configuration, then game folder kernel.
The update worked for me after that.

well i fixed it using pandora and magic memory stick.
used psp pandora deluxe v1.2 to create the magic memory stick.
the unbricker guide was good but required access to a working PSP which I did not have.
i bought pandora online from dealextreme and then a USB all-in-one card reader, magic memory stick and unbricked my PSP and flashed to 4.01 M33-2. unbricking process only took 10 minutes if even.
i suggest everyone to use pandora deluxe
