I heard about this a few months ago, and it wasnt until I saw that video a few minutes ago that I remebered about this. How do you guys feel about this? (if its true)

If this passes I hope riots break out. This is not democracy. Searching everyone without a reasonable suspicion.

I think this is just one of those things that is being spun around and being made to look like a big deal when it really is not. It's not like they'll just swarm your house and browse your HDD or anything like that. I'm sure this is just being put in place for the authorities to reserve the right to be able to view an HDD if they have strong reason to suspect that there's incriminating files (ie. Child Porn) located on it. Keep in mind I'm sure there's serious restrictions put in place for them to even be able to do this, though I don't know all of the details specifically.

I believe the push to enact this policy was largely in part because of an incident that involved a Border Guard who saw Child Porn on a laptop of somebody crossing the border and the laptop ended up locking itself after they closed it and they couldn't get back in. Having the right for them to have access to an HDD under certain circumstances isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I understand if they had incriminating evidence on me they could search my hdd with a proper search warrant. When would it ever be such an immediate situation that law officials couldn't do that?

It is not that big of a deal.

Probably isn't. I just don't like the idea that the government doesn't legally need evidence anymore to search someone.

They want to use what you have on your HDD as the evidence. If they don't have resonable suspcion in the first place, they're not going to waste their time.

Don't search warrants grant them that already?

yes, but not if they got the suspicion of illegal activity in an illegal manner

Isn't that hypocritical? If they used illegal means they shouldn't be laying a finger on my computer.

Just keeps getting more...non-democratic...as this continues.

That was my exact argument for wiretaps back on QJ, but back then I think only DFS agreed with me.

Overall, I agree with this line of reasoning if, in fact, there are decent restrictions in place as to when and how this can be done.

Silly way-too-far-right American Republicans.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that.
If/when the government takes away our right to bear arms, that's the time to say that. Totalitarian governments and all these dictators you read about almost always take away the people's right to bear arms and any possible opposition, before enacting anything huge like the holocaust or other ways of completely controlling the people.

On-topic (funny saying that in the off-topic subforum), I've read that many, if not all, of Obama's cabinet are people who wish to take down p2p sites and whatnot. There was a p2p site taken down a while ago, I can't for the life of me remember the name of it... but the lawyer who sought to terminate it is now one of his cabinet I think.
Wish I could find you the article, I'll look more for it when I get home.

Btw, in California at least, if the police have a suspicion that something illegal is going on, they can "freeze" your house and possessions- which means they make everyone get into the middle of the room while they watch you to make sure you don't trash any evidence, while another officer gets a judge's signature for a search warrant.
That is mostly in the case of suspected child abuse and such, like if a known pedophile is in a house and the officers suspect there is a child in the house.

Haha, I know that this was meant to incite discussion or something, but I just have to say that I don't think that Bush was the Republicans' #1 guy, juts look at his approval rating. XD If anything he was Democrats #1 guy, because he made it so easy for Democrats to win control of the House, Senate, and Presidency

Bush isn't as bad as people portray him, but he definitely isn't #1. Speaking from personal opinion, Huckabee is my favorite one as of present day.

As Joey said, not a huge deal. Unless you're an r-tard telling some cop you just downloaded 15 GB of shit, he's not going to search your hard drive.

The fact that the right wing people on this forum are even bitching is because Obama is passing it.

If you feel like your privacy is being invaded, don't do illegal shit. That's the risk you take. If you're perfectly clean (which I know some of you are not), you have NOTHING to worry about.
