Anyone else pumped for this? I know it's out on IOS today, but I'll probably be picking up a console version personally. Just curious to see everyone's thoughts now that Sonic is finally back to it's roots.

PS3, I might update for this, heard it's really good.

Shockingly Delicious
I tried it out on iOS but it's quite difficult to play without a d-pad, so I'll have to pick it up on PS3 eventually

I just saw the review for it at IGN and I'm stunned at how....horrible it is.
Sega still can't get it right. I mean they made a Sonic 4..but it just looks like a remake. They have the casino level from Sonic 2, underwater levels from Sonic1, dessert levels from Sonic 3, and so on.
Where exactly is the game that's supposed to be the SEQUEL TO SONIC 3. It does say Sonic 4 right?
My thoughts are that Sega still has no idea what they're doing with Sonic. All they've done is copy their old games and have made it look like a new game.
Jesus Christ Sega. Give up.
Just my thoughts so far from looking at videos online.

Bit harsh isn't it? Most of the sonic games are rehashes of the previous ones. And this is just Episode 1. If you don't want to play these levels then don't buy it. Wait for one that has levels you want to play.

Just from playing the iOS version I have to say I think this game will be pretty enjoyable. The levels are well built, and even if they are similar in theme to the older games, they are new and interesting as far as level design goes.

Im not much of a sonic fan but I am a video game fan and have played all Sonics and honestly, no matter what they do to Sonic... its just never going to be what people expected the very first time they played on the Genesis or MS.

Unless youre in love with the concept of Sonic, then no other Sonic title will be appealing. Although, in my case, at the time of Dreamcast - Sonic Adventure was pretty awesome since the 3d world was coming alive at the time.

Point being - Its like asking for Nintendo to bring Mario back to his roots and expecting something compelling. Mario as its roots is jumping. Sonic at its roots is running.

Oh fuck, we need a Parkour Sonic game.

I undecided at the moment between the iOS version and the ps3 version.

I have trouble controlling the iOS version sometimes, the virtual D-pad kinda sucks.

You know...maybe you're right Bran. I may have been too harsh. After more online video looking and stuff..I've decided I may pick it up. The only big gripe I still have though is that homing missile jump Sonic has now. It seems that it makes killing enemies a bit too easy. I'll just have to try it and see how it goes I suppose.

Nintendo brought Mario back to his roots... It was called New Super Mario Bros., and it was great. There's nothing inherently wrong with Sonic, Sega is just incompetent.

I've seen the homing jump used in some tricky platforming jumps though (ones that I botched, but blame on the iOS controls). It's adds an extra later to the platforming that was not present in the originals.

Also thank you for not being a total douche, it's always refreshing to hear someone be so courteous on the internet when someone makes a comment directly opposing theirs, even when it's as simple as the point I was trying to make. Which is sad to say since most of us here have known each other for a long time.

Good to see people getting along around here :p

OT: I'm picking this up day one. I love Sonic and I've been watering for this game for ages. SEGA give it to me now D:

By roots they adding multiple players, increased the graphics tenfold, and made it a side scroller. Thats not going to its roots, thats going to its roots and giving its miraclegro and then lacing it with LSD.

Sega would need to NOT use a pixel program, and do 10fold more to get to that games level.

Sonic is not a game that can grow very far. Its like trying to make Space Invaders epic in 2010. It was great and compelling when it was released but thats as far as it can advance. They tried the 3d route, and succeeded in some areas but failed in a lot of other areas.

I mean, how far can you drag a title through the mud that requires you to collect coins and race to the finish? You can attach a different story but its still going to be the same. Mario was able to accomplish it because they went to extreme length to revamp everything and they did a good job. Unless SEGA copies this exact revamp they arent really going to be changing anything.

Now Ive only seen a few videos of it but it really does look like every other sonic game just with fancier pixels. Im not bagging on Sonic but its hard to get excited when its just purified throw-up [metaphorically]

Infinity Gene IS epic.

lolwut?

I will agree that Sonic has been dragged thru hell and back the past few years and that most likely because of the original Sonic Adventure, that being a bad game, everyone thought was cool so SEGA just kept tweaking the formula over and over again to see if it would pass again but it just won't. So they made Sonic 4.

As far as I can tell Sonic 4 is what Sonic should have always been. It's all about the speed and sometimes stopping to figure out what's to do next.

This game is far from purifried throw up though. It is true that it's originality level isn't that high but this is just Episode I, so we can hope things can only get better (they can't get much worse than Sonic Unleashed can they?) for the blue hedgedog.

That's my opinion though.

Infinity Gene IS epic.

Seconded. IMO Space Invaders is always epic :p

Regardless of if its Ep 1 or not the core will remain the same. I just find it hard to get amped about playing Sonic with prettier graphics. Not to mention, the story of Sonic cant be that great. Eggman tries to conquer the world - k.

Lol, idk, maybe im biased? But thats just me

Maybe?

Or maybe you're just being realistic/rational and most of us are just still inlove with the games we played so many years ago and wouldn't mind reliving that experience at least one more time but with prettier graphics.

I think that explains it.

I think it might just be personal experience.

LoZ titles are always refreshing for me, yet they never really do change. Sonic just never was amazing for me [other than Sonic Adventure when it first came out]

I will admit, IG does look pretty cool, I didnt even know about it but if you look at it, it really still is Space Invaders with different camera angles. Which is cool and good in its own right but looking at this new Sonic looks exactly the same as the old ones.

Base line is that it just doesnt look appealing to me enough to care I suppose.

Makes sense. I love all LoZ titles to the point of owning Nintendo consoles just because of them.

Sonic was amazing for me when I was a kid because I just loved the feeling I got when I played them. Feeling that I lost when I played from Adventure came out and never got back.

For me, Sonic 4 is the game I've been waiting for all these years to have some closure.
