Exactly, and to be honest it works out much better.

Every time I get in, there is a bunch of people but nobody talks. Do you guys go in private chat or something (i am a newb with IRC)

That's just IRC, we all lurk. If you say something people join in but if a conversation dies down sometimes it can be a few hours until everyone starts speaking again.
A lot of people join and expect a full blown madhouse of conversation and when they don't see that they leave.... after only 10 minutes. So always say something when you join then we'll respond.
