can't install or uninstall programs

when I try to install/uninstall a program, I get

"Error 1401.Could not create key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."

running XP SP3

the location doesn't exist for me to delete

Try creating the key?

but what value would I give it?

nvm. a restart seems to have fixed it. cant believe I didn't try that first. doh!
