While id Software has traditionally licensed off its in-house game engines to third-parties, <a href="http://exophase.com/ps3/bethesda-parent-company-zenimax-media-acquires-id-software-11876.htm">last year's acquisition</a> by Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3 publisher ZeniMax has signaled an end to this practice.

This may be very bad. The number of games that use or have used a version of the various Quake engines is staggering. To simply affix the engine to a single company will likely lead to disaster. On the other hand, it's Bethesda, what's the worst that can happen?

TBH that wouldn't be a very good thing. Gamebryo isn't a bad engine and switching to another would kill all previous scripting knowledge people have carried over from Morrowind and other modding techniques. So long as the engine keeps on getting optimizations I hope they don't change it.
