iOS 5

Not surprised to see this overshadowed a bit due to E3, but iOS 5 was confirmed today, and with it, a decent list of new features that will be headed our way in the fall. Beta is out now for those registered developers (if we have any on these forums, send me a PM please).

Major new features are as follows:
Notification center: Overhaul of how notifications are displayed. Think of how it's done on Android devices, pull down menu from the task bar. Displayed on lock screen as well, where a swipe will get you into the message.

Reminders: Location based to-do list

Twitter integration: Login with Twitter and be able to instantly post from several built in apps such as photos.

Newsstand: Used for magazine and newspaper subscriptions in one easy to use location

Camera tweaks: Small editing features added to camera app, camera button on lockscreen, volume buttons can take pictures

Split keyboard for iPad

PC Free support: Setup device for the first time with no connections, sync device cable free, OTA updates

iMessage: Apple's answer to BBM

iCloud support

I thought RIM had a patent to BBM? I wonder if Apples used any of them.

Shockingly Delicious
The only new features that interest me are the ones that already exist for Jailbroken phones (Lockinfo, SnapTap) and I already have those

Android-like notifications.
Blackberry messenger-like messaging.
Twitter integration.

Makes the iPad 2 presentation back in March really fucking ironic.

That said, I really like the improvements to the Camera app and the idea of the iCloud service.

iTunes Match would be great too but it pretty much legitimises pirates. Pay $25 for a year, pirate loads of music and get it linked to your iTunes account. >.<

Los Doyers!
Nothing exciting for me personally.

Really was hoping for a new iPhone to atleast be announced.

So what are your guys' thoughts on iTunes Match. Something I didn't pay a lot of attention to, but several articles out there make for an interesting read about it: http://business.financialpost.com/2011/06/07/bootup-did-apple-just-monetize-piracy/

Sounds like a great deal to me.
I'll be making use of it I'm sure but I wonder what happens to the music after the year if you don't renew the subscription.
Before anyone cries out pirate, here's a photo of my CD collection.
The missus's collection is about 4 times that and I ripped her collection too.

Now if I was to buy all that music again, it would cost a ridiculous amount. However, $25 to have it matched up to my iTunes account sounds good to me.

We need some Apple devs here, I'm craving UDID activation, but I don't feel like trusting any of those services that will do it for you for a small fee..maybe if devs could use a Windows PC then I'd consider looking more into getting a development account, but pretty pointless right now for me. This beta looks so appealing though.

It's now possible to manually activate your devices if you plan on using the beta without being UDID registered and not lose features. Mac users will need to use redsn0w in conjuction with this guide and Windows users will want to use the latest beta of sn0wbreeze. Here you are: http://tomlerendu.com/tutorial/how-to-fully-activate-ios-5-beta-the-right-way/

Enjoy :)

redsn0w (Mac): http://blog.iphone-dev.org/redsn0w-iOS5
sn0wbreeze (Windows): http://ih8sn0w.com/sb28b1

Update: And right after the release of sn0wbreeze, redsn0w has now been made available for Windows. Take your pick ;)

Besides, as far as combating piracy goes, Apple is even widely rumoured to be working on a technology capable of making its devices aware of when they are recording trademarked material without consent, and shut themselves off.

So this is how the zune and other mp3 will take over lol
