It appears that the Nintendo 3DS is back on the rise after a slow start and thanks to a price drop. In 2011 Nintendo sold 12 million hardware units altogether in the United States. 4.5 million Wii's, 3.5 million DS variants and 4 million 3DS's.
Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing notes the reason for the success is that Nintendo has "the strongest software lineups in our [Nintendo's] history".
Super Mario 3D and Mario kart 7 have also enjoyed success becoming the fastest selling title to reach 1 million units sold each in the United States[...]
