FYI on how Frozen did it:

If you're using Photoshop, use the crop tool to select an area you want as a new image and copy it using the normal keyboard shortcut, then press CTRL + N (create a new empty canvas). Photoshop automatically sets the canvas height and width to the dimensions of the image in your clipboard (which will be the half of the image you selected from the other canvas). Then do the same thing with the half of the image that is left on the old canvas, leaving you with two half images and one empty canvas from which you took each half.

Of course, that isn't the only way to go about it, but probably how I'd do it.
