Ah right, didn't realize that :/. So why do they lock it down? Just curious on how that saves money for them.. Would be great to know :).

Well I'm just assuming that. It doesn't necessarily save money but they can charge more for the "unlocked" processor.

The unlocked chips are probably better binned, too. Not every chip Intel manufactures is capable of overclocking. So if the chip fails stress tests while OC'ed but is fine at stock they lock the processor.
