It’s been a while since Trepang2 sat in my wishlist, but those days are long gone.
Trepang2 is a fast-paced first-person shooter—a genre I’ve played to death and absolutely love, especially for the sheer chaos and keyboard-smashing fun it brings. Being a massive fan of Doom Eternal’s core gameplay, I had a feeling this would be right up my alley.
The game is published by Team17—you know, the folks behind Overcooked, Hell Let Loose, and the classic Worms series. It’s developed by Trepang Studio, an indie dev team that’s managed to make a name for themselves, even landing in the top 100 on IndieDB. Not bad at all, especially if this is their first game. I couldn’t find any traces of their past work, so I’m guessing this is their debut.
Trepang2 throws you into the boots of Agent 106, working for the Horizon agency, up against the Syndicate—a shady organization creating super-soldiers with powers. Your character, an ex-super-soldier from the Syndicate, is set loose to put an end to their twisted experiments. This explains why Agent 106 can slow down time and go invisible for a few seconds—yes, you get to feel like a total badass.
Trepang2 was a huge surprise for me. I didn’t expect it to be this violent—the sound of the guns, how they feel in your hands, the blood splattering everywhere, the explosions, and the crunch of every enemy bone you break—it’s all so visceral. The art direction is surprisingly beautiful, even though the environments are pretty standard for this type of setting. But man, those boss fights—they’re all unique in their own ways (except maybe the mini-bosses, those are just okay). The core mechanics are super easy to pick up but challenging to master, especially on higher difficulties. And the horror aspect? Didn’t see that coming. There were legit moments where I got the chills or jumped out of my seat—damn you, Trepang Studio!
The game features 5-6 main missions and 6 side missions, but the replayability is definitely there. With multiple difficulty modes and a ton of achievements to unlock, Trepang2 will keep you busy for a while—especially if you’re not exactly a pro at this kind of game.
There’s a decent arsenal at your disposal—8 weapons, 11 if you count the new DLC that just dropped. You’ve got everything from a basic pistol to a minigun and even a grenade launcher.
There’s nothing more satisfying than watching a group of enemies pop up in front of you and turning them into a bloody soup with a single grenade launcher shot.
However, there’s a bit of a downside to the weapon system. The weapon attachments (which are super useful on higher difficulties) are hidden around the maps as collectibles. Considering the game is pretty short and can be finished in an afternoon, this isn’t a big deal, but it would’ve been nice to have a different system for unlocking attachments rather than having to replay missions and hunt for them.
Speaking of difficulty, let’s talk about the different modes in Trepang2.
It ranges from Easy, like any other game, to Rage Mode. And trust me, Rage Mode lives up to its name. As I mentioned earlier, you’ll need to know every nook and cranny of each mission and have precise control over your powers because you’ll be dying in seconds. Even the developers suggest having at least 50 hours of playtime before attempting this difficulty—that says it all.
That said, even though it’s called Rage Mode, I had an absolute blast with it. It might be frustrating for some, but the game is super generous with checkpoints. I managed to finish the game twice and got all the achievements in just over 25 hours—total pro, I know.
My only real issue with Rage Mode is that I felt forced to use specific weapons with specific attachments. Some weapons, like the pistol or SMG, just don’t pack enough punch or aren’t useful in those situations. So I ended up blasting through the entire mode with a grenade launcher and shotgun.
As I mentioned before, replayability is a big plus in Trepang2—whether it’s trying out new weapons, strategies, game modes, or hunting for achievements.
The achievements are a lot of fun to go after, except for the collectible ones, of course. You’ll be challenged to complete all missions in Rage Mode, and there are some quirky ones too, like tossing a guard into a ventilation shaft (yes, an Among Us reference) or unlocking the hidden ending of the game.
Oh yeah, Trepang2 has a hidden ending. You need to collect 7 drones hidden in the main missions to access it—the true ending of the game, which sets up the next DLC (which, unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to try yet).
So, if you’re a fan of F.E.A.R.—because this game definitely gives off those vibes—or if you love fast FPS games like Doom, this game is absolutely for you.
Thanks for reading my review of Trepang2. See you on the battlefield!
