The stock exchange is open. There is small waiting period after buying stock for it to be shown. You can see the progress in the orders section.

Microsoft was an unlucky pick, you just happened to pick them as soon as they hit a rough patch.

The safe bet seems to be to just buy into Google and Apple. I refuse to buy Apple stocks so I put some cash into Interwoven Inc, hopefully it'll pay off.
