By default, the Wii can only output a video signal as high as 480p. Ever wonder what your favorite Wii titles would look like when rendered at the HD resolution of 720p? Thanks to the latest build of Dolphin, it is possible to emulate Wii titles at a higher resolution. The results are rather pleasing to the eye, especially in the case of Super Mario Galaxy.

Above is a video clip showcasing Mario's latest Wii adventure in splendid 720p glory. Apart from blurry HUD items, missing shaders and a few geometry glitches, the graphics look impressively sharp, void of any jaggies. Unfortunately, it's not running at full speed and we're told that this was tested on a moderately equipped PC rig donning a Core 2 Duo. Regardless, still very impressive.

Could a future Wii revision upscale old titles on the fly to achieve this level of visual fidelity? It's certainly possible, but the real question is, would Nintendo consider it? We can only hope so, especially with HDTVs becoming increasingly more commonplace in households.
