PS3 Diagnosing disc read error

Hi everyone,

This is probably common knowledge by now, but I can't seem to find good focused instructions on where to start when your PS3 won't read discs.

I recently inherited a 40gb model PS3 that won't read discs... but I don't know where to start looking for a fix.

Do I...

1. just clean the laser
2. buy and replace the laser
3. buy and replace the laser + mech
4. other fix I don't know about

Any links to instructions or reliable parts would be much appreciated

yup, try vrchards suggesstions. Also clean the laser first. if that dont work, my 60gb ps3 had a kem-400A. theyre are many many tutorials on how to change the laser ect ect
