Monitor dimmed on restart

Ok, here goes. My brother recently restarted the computer, and upon restart the screen has become very dark. It is as though it has no backlight, but I can faintly see the logon screen. Anyone here know what the problem could be? I'm thinking my Graphics Card could have just overheated, so I've got it unplugged right now.

Also, I'm pretty sure it's not the monitor, as when I press the monitors menu buttons the colorful menu comes up without a problem. Any help would be great, thanks in advance.

EDIT: God this was weird. On restart it turned out that the monitors Contrast had for some reason been set at it's minimum, and I completely overlooked it.

Do you have a laptop handy if so test out the monitor there.

Or if you have a vga port on the mb test to see if that can work.
