The Police are now allowed to hack into your private computer

Well there are too many people to nab and your chances of getting caught are still relatively low. I also don't think they will pay much attention to small-fish citizens. For example stealing software that isn't very popular or once in a while downloading music. I figure this attempt is more for small businesses and bigger-fish citizens. For example the people that download CS4 cracked, Office 07, Game ISO's, and programs that would otherwise cost hundreds or even thousands.

I also predict that this will eventually happen to the US. There have been some stories about tapping into phones and stuff like that in search of terrorism so it will more than likely come here as well. I'd think it would be relatively easy to find a way around this though. Like Vanden and Twelve's methods. There are probably more ways.

If all they can do is scan your HDD then there isn't really anything to be worried about.

It's not illegal to backup CD's. So having mp3's is nothing to worry about.
It's not illegal to backup your games. So having ISOs is nothing to worry about.
It's not illegal to backup movies. So DivX movies are nothing to worry about.
Scanning C:\Program Files won't even tell them that your software is pirated, they'll see all the normal files where they should be.

I think what they're really going to be looking for is things that are illegal to have regardless of the medium, things like child porn, hacking tools or evidence of terrorist activity.

Still it's wrong that they should be scanning any PC unless they have suspicion on you. In which case you should be arrested and your PC confiscated to be scanned.

The authorities could break into a suspect’s home or office and insert a “key-logging” device into an individual’s computer

If you know that they do that doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose? People will just stop googling "child porn" and "homemade bomb recipies".

If you know that they've done it then they've not broken in successfully.

The whole point is that you don't know that it's been done.

Just invested in a 500GB external the other week, looks like it's time to start using it.

Although I can't imagine this taking off in Ireland, I mean I hope I don't offend anyone, but in this country the police are pretty much made up of people who failed school.

This is really messing with people's piracy. What if someone has really personal stuff on their computer?? (and they are not doing anything illegal)

How exactly does one get evidence of people pirating without looking on their computer first (I guess IPs from torrents?)

I'd imagine they wouldn't be allowed to look at people's computers who they know personally. If not, then it's an even worse breach of privacy than it is now.

This thread title is misleading... thought it was gonna be a law saying police couldn't or something.

And that's just ridiculous... they won't find anything on my computer though.

I think it's pretty much the same as when the police are able to search your house. For example, they can come in if they have a reason and need to check to be accurate. Like if you got accused of having child porn etc.

dropping a bit off topic here

Where I live, the police are practically absent. I come from the place with the worst police station in Ireland (it isn't Limerick :O). You see a guard doing traffic stuff every now and again, if someone does break the law, even if the police are around, they'll do nothing to stop it.

Surprised we haven't decended into anarchy here :\
