How does one make an infinite source of water or lava? I've done it before but have no clue how

i couldn't get it with the methods shown, in the old map, when i made my pool, i somehow got the water to stabalize, but not certain how i exactly did

Also, you can create infinite lava but just placing some on a half step. So I now have a source of both infinite lava and infinite water in my base
