The red ring of death has been a much-feared bane on the Xbox 360's existence, signaling complete and utter system failure. It became so problematic earlier in the console's lifecycle that Microsoft doled out an extended warranty program to those affected. With the second generation slim Xbox 360,*Microsoft*forgoes the RRoD in favor of a dot outlined in red.

Once a sure-tell sign of failure, the red dot doesn't exactly mean a unit has gone completely bonkers[...]

Nice to see them tackle the problem of the red ring of death.....Change it to a dotted red ring of death. Wonder how much r&d that cost....lol

The rate the cooling fans go on a 360 staggers me, and it still get's hot :w00t:

That think is ugly. Red Dotted Ring Of Death, Bet the R&D did cost them a bomb, the guy must have felt real clever when he came up with it "I know instead of the controller lights lighting up all around, lets make it a dotted ring instead, it's clearly a ploy to try and get rid of the red ring persona, but is it not still a red ring, be it dotted or not lol.

The thinking behind this baffles me.

The only real way of stopping the red ring of death is to get a PS3 and have the yellow light of doom :)

Or buy the slim ps3 and avoid red/yellow/ any colour ring lmao

It was great to hear Major Nelson's response to the RROD question back at E3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGFC5OACaC0

I don't know why they did away with the red ring, it was a nice way of identifying what kind of failure you had on your Xbox 360 when it did fail (3 rings = RROD). I hate not being able to tell why something failed or shut-off. I guess they're pretty confident it just won't fail, and if it does you'll have an error message displayed on the screen.
