I dunno, I don't think that the response to the teacher was right. With that attitude, it makes us (Linux users) look like elitist pricks. Which may be the case for some, but I don't think his response reflects the open source community very well.
Agreed on some parts. Most of the people I know who use Linux think that they are the shit because they're being different than other people. His response represents that of the typical linux user. Elitist, rude and lacking tact.
If he had taken the time to educate her on the topic instead of belittling her for being ignorant, maybe more people would actually want to try Linux. I think a lot of people are afraid to try simply because they like being civil, well mannered and respectable. Just because someone does not understand something does not give you a reason to attack them.
I think the stereotype he has created for Linux people fits well. Though not all Linux people are elitists, a damn well large majority of them are.
