which distro will let me access most of the ps3 hardware (at least the hard-drive)? Ubuntu? Gentoo? Yellow Dog?

I have Fedora 9 on mine, with a custom built kernel for speed. Ubuntu doesn't work (for most people) past 7.10, with 7.04 being the best until 8.10 is ready (support for the PS3 wavered in Ubuntu after 7.04). Gentoo has a good live cd for the PS3 if you want to try that out. Look in one of the mirrors in experimental/ppc64/livecd/. The Debian live cd has issues with the current kboot/petitboot. Haven't tried YDL - too big for my tastes, and they use e17, which is still not ready for full-time usage.

The main thing is use XFCE instead of Gnome or KDE. There's not really enough memory for Gnome or KDE. Fedora uses a generic PPC64 kernel, and is much faster is you build a custom one (there's instructions in the F9 on PS3 thread in the Fedora Forums). The Gentoo live cd uses XFCE by default, which is another reason it's a good live cd to try.

yeah, on Ubuntu 7.10 you can't get past the kboot screen :p
I'll check Fedora and Gentoo, thanks.

Here's the Live CD I downloaded: WARNING!!! It's 82:24 long!!! You either need a good overburn, or use a slightly larger CD (they sell CDs that will store up to 99 minutes).

http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/experimental/ppc64/livecd/

Here's the Gentoo overlay page on installing Gentoo to the harddrive and updating to the latest.

http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/cell/wiki/InstallGentooOnPS3

Running the live cd is obviously pretty easy, but installing gentoo is a real chore. Fedora is easier to install if you can't handle gentoo's install procedure.

You can find threads and ask questions in the Mac & PPC section of the board.

Here's a thread on installing Fedora 9 on the PS3:
http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=188886

Read the whole thread before doing anything. You'll find stuff like removing PulseAudio (which isn't ready for use yet) and adding Livna to the repo list (Livna has all the goodies, like playing DVDs and MP3s) on the second page of the thread, and the main checklist for installing Fedora 9 and rebuilding the kernel that I used at post 30 of that same thread.
