It has come to light that America's Army, originally purported to be a $7 million flat project by the US military, outstripped its forecasted budget by a rather large margin. According to data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, GameSpot discovered that a total of $32.8 million has been sunk into the virtual recruitment tool since its inception back in 2000.

That's a hefty amount of cash blown on a game that by all accounts isn't exactly anything special[...]

Be that as it may, the money could've been spent elsewhere. What benefit has America's Army served? Increased recruitment rates? I don't know the actual numbers but I'm willing to bet not many people ended up joining the army because of this game. If they did then they probably already intended to.

What purpose has any of the other crap that the government does serve?

This gave money in licensing, developers, and such to pay for it. It wasn't like the money just vanished, you know.
