DICE* today formally announced that the Battlefield Bad Company 2 beta will open up to those who have pre-ordered tomorrow. The fragtastic stress test is scheduled to commence at 12:00 p.m. EST. Anyone can still gain access to the beta by pre-ordering the game on Steam, Direct2Drive, or at GameStop.

Honestly? When it comes to the Battlefield series, you can depend on only one thing when it goes from Beta to Final - any bugs, balance issues, and related technical issues will NOT be patched up in time for final. Take it from experience...

The beta is playing really well, saw a few people in game saying they were MW2 converts.

It does have technical issues, lots of sticking-on-scenery problems and some teething trouble with adding friends not updating for a while.

On the plus side DICE have said that over 100 issues are already fixed from the beta. Hopefully they are the issues we care about!

I'm mainly playing on the UK KillerCreation and Multiplay servers, both sporting good ping times in the 20-30ms range for me.

I played on a few high-ping servers; it is not a good experience, but hey, that's why we have dedicated servers, right?

As Nader says, balance does need some work - there is a bit of a medic bias as per BF2, but that makes some sense. The vehicle balance is better this time and the helicopters fly MUCH better with the mouse than BF2's.

I think it has the potential to fill the void left by MW2 on PC. Many folks were upset over Activision/IW's decision to cater mostly towards console gamers and force matchmaking for online play. DICE on the other hand is ensuring that PC version of BC2 is not viewed as an afterthought.

I've been really enjoying the beta so far and it feels very polished. It has that casual appeal too, fun to play in short bursts. I can see myself coming back to it for a long time to come. Hopefully DICE makes good on its promise to fix the bugs.
