Does it matter what PSP i buy?

I am a 100% pure n00b, that's why i'm here... :p

Please forgive me first if my question sounds so stupid, that it annoys you.

Right now, I am confused what PSP version to buy. In my country, there are shops selling PSPs that are version 1.5, 3.03 and 3.10-OEA. All these three PSPs are sold at different prices.

the version 1.5 being cheapest, and 3.10-OEA the most expensive.

I was thinking, why should i spend more money on buying the 3.10-OEA if I can buy a 1.5 at a cheaper price, and update the firmware to 3.10-OEA myself?

The shop keeper told me if i bought a version 1.5 PSP, and did the upgrade myself, it would still need to use some kind of dongle or some crap to play homebrew. He also said 3.10-OEA PSP is by far the most convenient where homebrew games can be accessed directly via the mem card. even version 3.03 has to go thru some menus or process. And he said i would brick my psp if i downloaded and installed firmwares myself from the internet, because only shops like them have "special" softwares to "install" the 3.10-OEA.

So, i'm wondering, is there a difference if i bought the 1.5 and did a self-upgrade? because the price difference between a 1.5 and 3.10-OEA is almost $30.

Are there major hardware differences between the "older" 1.5 PSP, or the newer 3.03 PSP or 3.10 PSP?

Or are these shops selling all the same PSPs, just that they upgraded the firmwares themselves, and charge n00bs a higher price for their "service" ?

yes that is true. there is no "dongle" needed to run homebrew, all you need to do is read the 3.10 OE-A install guide which is just a process of building the update file then running the flasher.

IMO these guys are crooks.. making money off free software and taking advantage of new PSP users. well, just buy the 1.5 and follow the guide here. glad to have saved you $30!

Your saying that a shop around you sells a PSP with 3.10 oe on it??? And you have a choice which firmware you want...well all I can say is dont waste you time listening to some guy that has no clue what hes talking about....get the 1.5 update it youself....you dont need anything else...trust I have 3 psp...all 3.10 oe...and I updated them all myself...hes a lie...

Hey thanks for the speedy reply, it's exactly what i needed to hear!

To JKing:

Yup, there are shops here selling pre-loaded, or self-customised PSP with different firmwares! That's why i'm confused if Sony released so many variants of PSP!

So, in the end, it's just the SAME PSP all around, just loaded with different firmwares! What crooks! and confusing! (to a n00b like me)

Thanks x3sphere, and JKing again for the wise words i need to see myself haha... :)

Np Bro! :o :o

Just to be sure...

Okay, now I somwhat have an idea of what's up with PSPs, but one more questions comes in my mind again... what is the "newest" PSP Sony released? Are there many generations of PSP?

I mean, PSP was released like, a few years back right? The PSP loaded with 1.5 by defalt will it be an "old" PSP? Or somewhat the "first" generation? So, now, what's the current, newest generation PSP in the market now? The "newest" batch of PSP from Sony is preloaded with 3.03 OE right?

So, are there any hardware differences between the 1.5 batch and the 3.03 OE batch? Are the hardware specifications the same?

Will getting the "newest" 3.03 OE be better than the "older" 1.5? Are there hardware improvements or differences? What are the benefits, or cons of getting the "newest" PSP?

Because before I purchase a PSP, i have 2 options to choose from

1) Buy a PSP preloaded with ver 1.5 and flash it to 3.10-OEA
2) Buy a PSP preloaded with ver 3.03 OE, downgrade to ver 1.5, then flash to 3.10-OEA

Which one should I choose, if option 1 can save me about $15 ?

ok Clyde...

1st: I don't know where the hell you are buying these psp's from and it sounds Extremely dodgy.
2nd: but anyways, their is no hardware difference between the two firmwares as firmwares are just software upgrades.
3rd: i would definately choose the 1.50 psp, upgrading to 3.10 OE is hell easy.

er... for it being dodgy, yeah, that's why i'm asking for help and advice. I'm totally lost. and btw, i'm currently in Asia, and they do like to make things complicated.

but now, thanks to everyone here, the sky is clearer... and I'll get myself a ver 1.5, and upgrade to 3.10-OEA.

You guys rock! :)
