Downloading games from the PSN

I just tried to download a game demo from the Playstation Network Store.
It gave me an error on the USB-to-PSP program, and then I looked at my PSP screen and it was filled with all sorts of text.
I'm assuming it noticed I was using an unofficial firmware and told me so?
Someone want to explain to me why it happened?
Is it impossible to download stuff from the PSN with a custom firmware or what?

No, downloading PSN games on custom firmware works. You should try again, and post the message that pops up.

The installer gives me this error:
'0x80048511'

At which point, the text on the screen appears, saying:
'Setting information is corrupted. Press the O button to repair and restore default settings.'

(just a note, this is only for games. I can download wallpapers and themes just fine)

I would try formatting the flash1. To do this enter Recovery Mode by holding R when booting up the PSP. Now select "Advanced" and hit Toggle USB (flash1). Backup all files/folders to your computer then exit USB mode and select "Format flash1 and reset settings."
