EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau has downplayed the need of next-generation consoles, stating his belief that the current crop of HD consoles -- PS3 and Xbox 360 -- provide enough value for gamers. In fact, Gibeau says it's hard to make a justification for new hardware at this point in time, given the potential cost of transitioning.

Gibeau told CVG, "It's hard for me to conceive what you would do on a PlayStation 4,"[...]

Sure, give the current consoles a RAM/GPU upgrade and we won't need new consoles.

The fact of the matter is, is that all 3 consoles are running on extremely outdated hardware that is limiting what content creators can do. And it is especially holding back the PC gaming industry with console to PC ports rather than PC to console ports.

If things go well, the WiiU will be destroying the PS3 and 360 with it's 1GB of dedicated VRAM and the substantially more powerful R770 series based GPU in the graphical department alone.

Yeah but the question is will they make games that really take use of that and look good and show it off, or will it be a bunch of multiplayer mini game games for kids with a few real games here and there.

I doubt that seriously.
And besides, using the whole kiddie argument is invalid anyway.
Nintendo produced plenty of great games for the wii that can be enjoyed by everyone and not just kids.

While you are at it, why not just go play some "realism simulator" forever.

Trigun - "is limiting what content creators can do".
No. It's limiting the amount of pixels n shit that they can push. IMO there's a ton of untapped power there to create wonderful titles and engage gamers much deeper than better anti-aliasing and higher resolutions or larger textures. It's one thing PC-only gamers seem to forget - it's not only graphics that make the game, which is exactly why you can pick up a PS2 game today and still enjoy it. Good games need not be the flashiest around and thus I feel developers, if given time to work on consoles which they're familiar with, can create unique and wonderful games. Throw a bunch more horse-power at them and you're not going to get creative use of the tech.
I would like to see new consoles eventually... but as it is... we're still untapped, creatively.

The Wii U is most likely going to be flooded with mini games and kids games like the Wii. Sure the Wii had "mature" games, but the ratio to kids games is like 100:1

There is no way that the Wii U will takeaway any significant portion of the 360 and PS3's userbase. Xbox LIVE is too strong a service at this stage of it's lifecycle to have gamers relinquish all of that value to play the same game on the Wii U with less friends and another gimmicky controller. It just won't happen with multiplayform games, and what exclusives are they boasting about? Nothing that's caught my eye at the moment.

I have seen this with my nephews already, and the generation of kids who begged for Wiis when they launched at age 5-8 have already moved onto the 360 and PS3 and are playing shooters on them. Parents will not be buying another Nintendo console for these kids to add to their collection.
