Microsoft today lifted the wraps on Fable III, announcing a 2010 release date. A platform exclusive, the title is a sequel set around 50 years after the previous entry. This time around, developer Lionhead is set on expanding the gameplay element of making choices and the consequences surrounding them, in an attempt to further break away from the traditional RPG formula.

As a child with family roots stemming from the main protagonist in Fable II, players will be able to choose their destiny from a "hero, villain or someone between." Justice-seeking players can uphold moral values and grow up fighting for a prosperous Albion, eventually becoming its ruler. Those with a nefarious instinct can make choices that will lead Albion to the brink of collapse.[blockquote2]“We’ve spent a lot of time at Lionhead thinking about how we can innovate the gameplay and progress the world of the ‘Fable’ games for its third chapter, and we’re confident that players won’t second-guess what we have planned for ‘Fable III,’” said Molyneux, who also serves as creative director of Europe, the Middle East and Africa for Microsoft Game Studios. “Though I can’t give too much away right now, players should expect to have to make much tougher choices with far wider consequences than ever before in Albion — and with many more interactive adventure elements.”[/blockquote2]Sounds ambitious, just as you'd expect from a Molyneux title. There was a fairly large gap between the release of the original Fable and its sequel, so it's somewhat surprising to hear that a third installment is already on the way and planned for release next year. Sure doesn't bother us in the slightest, though.
