I keep hearing all these things about a fake memory stick.

WHat is the truth behind it and what is just a myth.

I heard that using a fake Memory Card to updgrade to an OE can
increase the chance of BRICKAGE? i don't even wan't to try that.

I'm simply asking because i bought a Memory stick from EBay,
and it seems that it's fake because when i chack the stick it says
"MAGIC GATE 'UNKNOWN' "

so i assume it's fake, but i need not to worry about using it to update, because
i am already on 3.03 oe-c.

my second myth question is, by using a FAKE memory card, do i risk creating problems
with my PSP by using hombrews, psx/ps1 or iso games? or is all memory cards the same?

Your new card IS fake. When saving games data will corrupt randomly. Transfer speeds when it does work will be 1/4 to 1/2 of the real cards. worst of all , if you have say a 2 gig fake... it may only hold half that... but ive heard of them maxing out at 32 mb. Some have better luck and their save games only corrupt sometimes..

as to issues with homebrew , games , prx , mp3 , video.... Yes if your data corrupts ANY thing on the MS could be corrupt.

it's ok. at least i got some heads up.

but FAKE MS don't damage the PSP in any manner to make turn it to a BRICK!!??
 
if you use it to upgrade or downgrade yes it can.... using it for simply games is very unlikely but i wont say impossible.
 
alright thanks.. yes, i have an origial MS as well, that i will definitely use for upgrades in the future. or downgrade if ever... and as for games, i'll just try to use it safely on homebrews and stuff. thanks for the help dude.:D
 
Don't get me wrong i dont think ive ever heard of it happening (bricking playing games from fake MS) but ANY thing is possible.
 
i know. just going to seperate my less tangent stuff and tangent stuff. i'll get the emulation and iso's and hombrews on the original MS, and get the LEGAL DOCS, such as music, pix, and saved data from UMD disk on the Fake MS, dat should help elliminate possibilities, and perhaps, continue doing my back ups on the computer as i have with each games and emulators i Download unto the MS. thanks for sharing your thoughts though! :D
 
Hello I need a little help to determine wether my new MS is good or fake.

I bought a 4gb stick from Ebay from a buyer who has over 3000 transactions and a good feedback of 99.7%. I have recieved my card and I put a few games on my card to test.

Now the first one (sege genesis collection) worked but the sound stuttered when loading from the card to start with (seemed fine ingame).

The 2nd game (Lego startwars 2) got to the save part and said I had insufficent space to save. I needed 27 k of space. I went back to the psp browser and it said I had 2.5 gig of space left??

I tried another game and it was fine.

Now i followed that guide from the aussie ebay link and my card looks 100% genuine. I see in these forums people say goto the XMB movie player in your psp and check there but I cant find this anywhere??? Is it because I have no movies on the card?

IS there any other ways of fidning out or how do I check with the movie player? and Thanks for any help, this site has been brilliant in helping me install 310 O EA

Well it might not be fake but could be a faulty memory stick. Try formatting it through the PSP and see if that solves your saving issues.

As for the XMB movie player, they are referring to the video icon on the PSP main menu.
 
Thanks for the reply. I tried formatting it but the same still happens. I tried NHL and it all seemed ok untill I started playing. It stutters ingame and only when the orange light flickers so I am guessing its a faulty card.
 
I have a 4GB and it says magic gate: unknown. But mine has the . after 003
....is the card real or not? also i bought it for like 50pound :D

i think it's fake. mine say's unknown also,
but it fits as much as it states. so i'm good.
i only play my ps1 ripped files on it though.

I just bought a Sony pro duo 4gb stick and I'm pretty sure it's fake since i got it for so cheap ($51) it looks genuine BUT I opened it up and the memory says Samsung on it. Does anyone know if fake memory will have this printed on the chip inside? I'm waiting for my psp to be shipped right now so i cant test it right now.

I bought a fake MS from ebay like alot of others. A Sony 1GB Memory Stick Duo Pro from ebay seller: crazyondigital

This fake was very authentic looking, you would almsot never know by looking at it. This is how I found out:

Genuine uses print ready/control vector art technique and has all letterings engraved by laser-etched into the plastic shell of the card. Fake uses inferior hi-res bitmap to copy the genuine, so zoom in a bit to see the printing flaw. The font on the fake usually is messy, out of focus and rub off easily. To know if it is printed, just use your finger to feel the surface as the letterings are a bit raised.

Genuine clear plastic packaging has long (staple shape) heat seals indicated by the yellow arrows. Fake has round dot glue seals (not heat).

To the right hand side of the packaging there are 4 pictures. Some fake has the 4 pictures arranged in incorrect order.

- My packaging actually had an incorrect picture. Instead of an mp3 player image mine had a laptop lol

I can say this from first hand experience that 99.99% of ebay listings for similar memory sticks are fake. I went through and looked at alot of listings that had pictures and it was obvious that most of them were fakes. The sad part is you can get a REAL MS for almsot the same price as the cheap fakes on ebay at tigerdirect.com this is what I ended up buying after the fake for nearly the same price:

Seriously guys, just buy a real MS from tigerdirect and stay away from ebay for mem sticks =/
 
My memory stick doesn't work now after 3 weeks and it says 5 year guarantee on packet.
The shop where i got it from should be prepared for me shoving it up there ...... >:-O
 
Well , i have a 4g memory stick. It appears like unknown in magic gate compatibility.
but i have read all the articles about fake memory and i think that my MS looks genuine.
I already formatted in PSP. But still appears unknown.
