The PlayStation 2 was one of the most successful video game consoles of all time. Not only did it sell like crazy, but it had a library that was practically unmatched. That's not to say that the GameCube and Xbox didn't have some stellar games, but as far as the sixth generation in video games is concerned, the PlayStation 2 was king.

That's why it's strange to see how Sony has fallen from its throne with the PlayStation 3, a platform that former Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division President Robbie Bach states helped the Xbox 360 manufacturer reach great heights[...]

That's obvious. Sony went into this Gen with a big head (thanks to the PS2 destroying the competition) and thought gamers would just line up for any price they happened to slap on the new machine.
It sure didn't help their case any when it turned out, developing for the new console proved harder than it was on the 360 and the amount of bad publicity that ensued after that for the first few years of it's lifecycle. It gave Microsof the foothold they needed to launch ahead, possibly much more than if Sony had been more humble and planned a machine not on perceived guaranteed sales, but on pleasing the gamers and trying to prove themselves once again.
TBH though, as much as it hurt them to have to suffer that, I think it's made them a strong company in the process whom now know that they can just as easily stumble as find success.
