A US study has found that people who play games regularly are more likely to take drugs and drink alcohol than normal people. They could have saved a lot of time and money by just asking us though.

Professor Laura Walker, who led the study from Brigham Young University in Utah, said: "The most striking part is that everything we found clustered around video game use is negative." Makes you wonder if they actually tried to find anything positive.

Games are usually pinned with making idiotic (sorry... easily influenced) teens violent, but according Walker: "It appears video games are related to a host of other negative outcomes."

800 university students were questioned, and it found that students who played games regularly were 10 percent more likely to have a tipple or take drugs than their non-gaming friends.

Those who play daily are said to be three times more likely to smoke cannabis, stop talking to friends and family and, female gamers in particular, have low self esteem, according to the report published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence (via the Telegraph).

"It may be that young adults remove themselves from important social settings to play video games, or that people who already struggle with relationships are trying to find other ways to spend their time," said Walker. "My guess is that it's some of both and becomes circular."

Nothing I enjoy better then loading up Unreal Tournament III, Team Fortress 2 or pretty much any other video game and taking a few hits off the bong first or a nice Vodka & Redbull. :D

Can't say I belong in that anti-social group however.

hell yes before i play i have to snort anything i can find, and then once im done playing my overly violent game i am disallusioned and take the violence to the streets as if i was still playing the game. nothing like a good old fashioned real-time fps :p

I love shooting up sometimes too and then I go outside and go GTA on my neighborhood. :p

The problem however is how we pull it off. According to this article we should be very anti-social, so why would we want to go out in public? Gamers are Hermits. :D
 
Bullshit, I pretty much stopped playing games regularly when I started drinking regularly and other things. All my friends are big drinkers and none of them play videogames at all.
 
My wife's a big pothead, so I'll usually take a few hits before sitting down to play usually. First thing she does after work every night is smoke.

I'll agree with Gutya though. When I was in college and boozing and partying pretty much every night, the last thing I did was play video games. I was too busy chasing woman around.
 
Only time I can ever drink and game at the same time is playing WoW but that's just because WoW is so slow paced. Yet it's also the most social game I play, so I guess it throws everything in that article out.

Other than that gaming and drinking are never mixed for me.

As for drugs, I've not taken anything that wasn't medicinal for about 5 years which was before I was heavily into games so doesn't really come into it for me.

Cigarettes and gaming have a very tight relationship with me. I probably come close to the "take a break every hour" thing written into Game manuals, but that's only because I'm pausing the game to spark up.
 
I'm sorry, they ask university students if they drink and do drugs and are surprised!

I don't consider myself antisocial (bitches love me), I just get annoyed easily. When I stop talking to people it's cause they fucking suck.
And I don't smoke weed.

But Yeah, I drink. probably a lot more then I play video games.

I actually find that to be an over generalization. It really depends on the class of gamers. Look at most of the hardcore MMO players (WoW, EQ II, etc). Most don't drink or do drugs. You know why? Because they're too busy having no lives.

Also because their beer and drug money goes to their MMO subscription. ;)

Depends on the drug. At one point I was smoking pot about 4-5 times a day and would go through an ounce every week to week and a half. I did this for over a year. When I then lost my job in May of last year and had to quit smoking pot (for a while) it was incredibly easy.
 
In order to play halo better i usually mix meth, coke, heroin, and my own piss in a blender, then inject it into my nutsack.

shit, i remember when jenkem was like the "in" thing, we all used to take a few hits and get down on some Halo-2. When we come down we would rampage the streets at night stealing cars to trade in for some meth, just to stay up and shit ourselves and make more jenkem, it was great.

But i used to be in this class of gamer, i used to go to my friends house, when he got a 360, and i would smoke the fuck out on this glass, ocean themed, bong i had and play video games, while he went out and did all his drugs with the snotty little females that wouldnt give up ass at all.

One time, i got those snotty bitches together, got em drunk as fuck, threw some xannies in the mix, and sat em down, to watch condemed, on my buddies big screen, with his surround sound, on full blast. 2 of those snottie bitches gave it up that night, the ones that got off on gory shit.

but yah, to a certain class of people that are gamers, drugs are what keep them glued to the tube, especially the adhd mofro's

I don't like taking anything before I game because it makes me suck. Plus when I'm drunk/high I could play with a stick and get just as much enjoyment out of that, it's just not worth the effort to game in that state.
