Transfering gamesaves from PS1 Memory Cards to PSP without a DexDrive [Guide Inside]

How can I transfer saves from my PS1 memory cards to my PSP, I don't have a Dex drive but I do have a PC, a PS3, a PS3 memory card reader and a PSP 3.40 OE-A.

I heard something about being able to transfer saves via the PS3 but is it safe to hook up your custom firmware PSP to your PS3?

Did somebody make a PC driver for the PS3 Memory Card Reader so it can be used on the PC like a Dex drive.

Basically any info on getting PS1 saves from PS1 memory card to PSP memory card. Thanks in adavance.

Limitations.

I've done a good amount of searching here and there over time and the only ways I've heard of need either a DexDrive or a modchipped PS2...

PSX Memory Card 2 PSP

The program PSXMC2PSP (which was bundled with CWCheat for a while) can be used to move saves via your PS2... been too lazy to try it myself honestly...
If it works post your results here!

Thanks Krelian, I got it working. I'm going to sleep now, I'll post a sort of tutorial on how I got it to work when I wake up.

Looks like I'll have a little project!

That's great news! I'm glad you got it going!

Here's a guide on how I was able to transfer PS1 saves from my PS1 memory cards to my PSP using PSXMC2PSP

First you'll need the following:
-A PS2 system that can run homebrew (either through modchip, swap magic or PS1 exploit on mem card)
-CWCheat which you can get here
-CWCheatPOPS Update for 3.40 OE-A and Under which you can get here
-PSXMC2PSP which can be found here

1: Installing CWCheat on the PSP
After extracting the 3540_CWCHEAT_0_1_7_REVB.RAR go into the MS_ROOT folder and copy the seplugins folder to the root of your PSP memory stick. Rename the 13556_cwcheatpops.prx update file to cwcheatpops.prx and then copy it to the seplugins folder on your PSP, overwriting the one that was already there. Boot your PSP in Recovery mode (Hold R while Booting) and go to plugins and enable cwcheatpops.prx.

2: Using PSXMC2PSP to obtain an image file of your PS1 Memory Card
Run CXPSXMC2PSP.ELF on your PS2 (use whatever method you want to run the .ELF file on your PS2 if you don't know how to look it up in google). Once you come to the red screen, insert the PS1 memory card you want to copy and hit L2 to refresh, then connect your PSP in USB mode to one of the USB ports on the PS2. Once the PSP is connected hit SELECT on the PS2 controller to start the copy process. This will create a .MCR file in \seplugins\cwcheat\mc\ on the PSP memory stick.

3: Converting the saves from the .MCR file into real POPS saves
There no way as of yet to do any kind of file conversion so here's what I did. First of all you need to rename the .MCR file to whatever the game code is. So If you want to retrieve saves from FF7 let's say, the game code for FF7 is SCUS-94163 (codes are written on the spine of the game boxes)so you'll want to name the .MCR file SCUS_94163-0.MCR (keep in mind that on multiple disc games each disc has it's own code so if you wanted to load a FF7 save from disc 3 then you would have to rename the .MCR file to SCUS_94165-0.MCR). Once the MCR file is properly named, launch your PS1 game on the PSP and as soon as the first screen of the game appears hold down the SELECT button on your PSP until the CWCheat menu appears and go to Manage memory cards, then with the <- and -> on the d-pad make sure that the file currently loaded is the -0.MCR file which it should be by default, then select load memory card 2 from memory stick. Then exit out of CWCheat and the load your save which should be in slot 2, then once your game starts immediately save your game to a spot in the slot 1 card and this save will be an official POPS save that will no longer need to be loaded with CWCheat. And there you have it.

P.S.: Make sure you load the CWCheat .MCR file as soon as the game loads otherwise the game might access the POPS memory card in slot 2 and then when you load the .MCR file in Slot 2 the saves will appear corrupt. If this happens exit the game completely and relaunch it and try loading the .MCR file via CWCheat earlier.
