Yeah, that's what happened to me for the first few days. Google is getting loaded with invites so they keep on closing them off for a bit. They open up again later so just keep checking.

Does google even have friend requests?

Also the Google+ app on my phone is worlds better and smoother than the facebook app, and it done something I always wanted from my phone auto upload pictures to a private album. Im in love I can only hope this is going to kill facebook.

As a Google+ user, you get the following:

Unlimited photo uploads. Photos larger than 2,048 by 2,048 pixels will automatically be resized when uploading.
Unlimited video uploads (up to 15 minutes per video, up to 1080p)
