Help with PSP Slim: Buying, Downgrading and Time Machine

Hi All,

First off, this is my first post. This site is very helpful, but there are a lot of things out there, some of which are out of date and others that get confusing, so I am asking some questions here for some help. So any help would be aprreciated.

Before I start, I want to mention that I currently have a PSP Phat running 3.71 m33-4 with a Pandora Battery. This is a lunch PSP Phat, and it has lasted me a good long time. But it is time for me to get a new PSP and I want to make sure that I get everything figured out properly. So here are my questions:

1- I want to make sure I can get a PSP that I can put CFW on. From reading 3 other forums, I found multiple replys. I went to my local Best Buy and found a couple of Core Packs for the Slim. The serial number on them are psp-2001PB / 98510. The box print date is 2007. From my readings, this is supposed to be a safe PSP to buy. Can anyone here confirm that this should be safe?

2- If this PSP is downgradable, but cannot make a Slim Pandora Battery, is it possible for me to use my PSP Phat to make the Slim Battery a Slim Pandora Battery? What I mean is, can I take the PSP Slim Battery, put it in my PSP Phat, and create the Slim Pandora?

3- I need to have a Slim Pandora Battery because I would like to run Time Machine. However, I do have some questions about Time Machine:
3a- Will this run just like 1.5 or are there limitation? I like to run emulators, and some emulators only run on 1.0-1.5 or run better on this. The PSP Phat run these fine with the 1.5 Kernel. But since this is not really using the 1.5 Kernel, do these still work?
3b- I really use my PSP heavily to watch movies, primarily with PMPMOD. Will PMPMod work on the Slim using Time Machine?
3c- Can you use TV out while using Time Machine?

4- Is there some up to date guides that you would recommened me to look at before moving forward?

Thank you for all your help.

Answers.

1. if not you just bought it , return it right away.

2. yes

3. I have no idea, i have a phat.

4. Check the faq forum. Can never be to informed. Cant take more then an hour or two to read them all.

Just to expand a little.....

1. Only one PSP to avoid and that is the newest ones - running 4.05. as said already if you do get one return it to the shop....Quick! All the others can be coverted to CFW although creation of Pandora via slim psp is limited to the very first slim (TA-085) later revisions blocked the Soft mod.

2.Yes,Although you can i would advise against converting any slim battery to pandora, while it will work i have heard of terminal failures following conversion to service mode

3. I have used most emulators with my Slim and all have worked, most homebrew is now ported to the 3.xx and 4.xx kernels these days.

Have you considered simply converting your movies to MP4 and watching them that way, its really easy.

I actually like the features in PMPMod. I really wish they continued it.

How do people use time machine if not by using it with a pandora? Do they just switch to 1.5 and leave it there. I would personally want to switch back and forth. I guess I am spoiled by my phat.

BTW, what do you encode your movies with? xvid4psp?

Let me get this straight...any psp out of the box (United States) running OFW lower than 4.05 can be converted.?

That seems to be the case although as a Indicator is not exactly set in stone.

So far the TA-088v3 Mobo has only been found with 4.01 and 4.05 OFW installed, anything lower and it is most likely NOT the TA-088v3.

The Time machine can only be used with a Pandora, and can switch between FW's.

I always use Magic3gp Converter Avi>MPEG4 takes about 20 mins.

I just found another PMP app. It's called PMPlayer Advanced. I would strongly recommend everyone to look into this app. You still need to do encoding, however, this tool is so much better the PSP Video Player for the following reasons:

- You can bring your CPU speed down to 66 and still play movies perfectly. This saves tons of battery.
- It will remember the parts you left off at when you shut down the app.
- You can change the luminosity for movies.

It really is like PMPMod but much better. Not to mention this also handles PMP2. (PMP+MP3). This thing also handles MP4! So playing MP4 at 66Mhz is pretty sweet.

Iyou have som solid box code stuff to look at (us theory) please advise.

The box code serials as i understand does not indicate MOBO. It's a theory that does not explain TA-090mobo (which in Slims is able to switch to CFW).

Truth is it's a lottery unless you can get them to turn it on for you to check FW in the shop, there must be a way to do that  isn't there?

Is there an OFW that can not be converted to CFW in a slim?

No. It's the MOBo that determines whether you can switch to CFW.

TA-088v3 is best avoided, and the PSP-3000
