Homebrew

Has there ever been a console that allows you to run homebrew?

i mean as in legit homebrew without exploits. a bad example is PSP with FW 1 and 1.50. i mean the factory will allow homebrew to run on the consoles without any mods?

Do you think that we should have homebrew on OFW and how much access do you think we should have? user/vsh/kernal

Should there be like a user ranking with determines how much access you can have, so newbies cant brick there consoles?

and also, are ISO loaders a are bad thing and what ideas do you have against piracy?

What could sony add to there FW to turn you back to OFW?

Yeah, it was like the PSP but i fogot what it was called, it was open-source and based on linux.
Cant remember :(

And i think Sony should roll out a free sdk, and then a paid developers program, like how apple does so we get more features, not just games music and movies XD

There are easy ways of running homebrew on most commercially available consoles but not without an exploit. Running homebrew on firmware 1.50 still required an exploit by the way, it just wasn't as noticeable to the end user when compared to loading a TIFF image for the 5.03 exploit.

If Sony officially allowed homebrew access they would most likely give developers user access only - since that's what game devs have now. Nearly all homebrew can be run under user mode with the notable exception of ISO loaders so it is a good compromise. Plus it'd also mean that users would not be at risk of bricking their PSP, since flash access is restricted in user mode.

I would never revert back to official firmware on any of my PSPs but there's lots of features Sony could still add, like proper Flash support for YouTube playback and a better RSS reader with the ability to read regular text-based feeds. It'd also be nice to a see a port of Life with PlayStation on PSP.

I think digital downloads are a great way to combat piracy. If Sony launched the PSP without a UMD drive from the start it wouldn't have been as hacked open as it is now. Game exploits are essentially a non-issue with digital titles since Sony can update any of the downloads at will.

I think you're thinking of Pandora.
I have more thoughts on this topic but heading to work so shall elaborate more later.

well its open for debate, if sony added wpa2 then i would go to OFW just for internet. And 1.50 needed Kxploit right?
for iso dumpers and piracy, what i think is that if its possible to make a dumper which adds a code/signiture to the dumped iso which is specific for each PSP so it will only work on one psp.
but if sony gave us user mode homebrew, who would change?

Not me, i love my CFW, cant live without it

Theres so much more to do with it than what sony allows us, so it always helps having access to the devices FULL potential, not just what the manufacturer wanted. (this goes for pretty much any console). The ability to use flash themes and have an over-all desktop like device in your hands is just something i cant pass up.

haha totally agreed. the main winners for on CFW is:
back-up support
customize everything
homebrew
:)

Atari if I remember right, was developed in this manner.

I wouldn't trade back to ofw for any thing. If any thing I would get tired of waiting for sony and figure out how to impliment wpa2 for instance. Just because it isnt broken doesnt mean we wont fix it.

Gear heads dont buy lamborghinis to install governors. People capable of writing homebrew dont write it to stay within the box. They want to push limits. Expand capability. Something the industry wouldnt allow in their homebrew playpen.

I do think that we should have homebrew on OFW...as for access, well kernel access is overkill so simple things like games and most apps. As far as I know, kernel access is really only needed for INSTALLING CFW (feel free to correct me if wrong). However, being able to totally customize the vsh would be essential and maybe even a official plugin system.

Noone should really have need to access the flash on the PSP if given a plugin/custom menu system that is supported by Sony. Yes, there are themes already but they only change the icons and background, they don't touch the gameboots, coldboots, menu order or style and the sounds.

As for ISO loaders....yes, I think it's a bad thing. It encourages so much piracy which has become so widespread and accepted that it's sickening. Yes, I like having my backups but an official method of backups would be good...say that was signed to a specific psp/memory card combo or something.

couldnt have said it better.

I would not go back to OFW, if you paid me... It's seriously behind the times and lacks many of the great features of CFW.
