installing custom firmware first time

pmc

New Member
Hi

I have the PSP slim with official firmware 6.20 installed, and would like to install a custom firmware...either "GEN D3" or "M33-6" but I'm not sure how to go about it without bricking my console.:confused1:

Can someone please give advice on what firmware, and wether I need to install earlier versions, then update, or just install from the latest offerings.

Thank you

did you buy it with that firmware?

Hi alex_e

It's my sons PSP and was bought with official firmware. I'm not sure what version it was a year ago, but he has since updated a couple of times to the 6.20 ver, if that's any help!

The reason I asked is because he has an .ISO file from P2P that states it's working on "cfw 5.50 GEN-D3"
So I googled and found out it was CFW, but I read a few negatives and saw others preffered M33's CFW,
and then it become a mine field of info, and I was just hoping I could go straight to the horses mouth and hopefully have an experts or knowlagable groups opinion, before I blundered into it and bricked his psp...:cursing:

you bricked your sons psp.... hes not going to be happy is he? :w00t:

right before we hop into the big fish can you still get into the recovery menu?
when you turn it on, hold R. does anything come up?

My apologies alex_e

"before I blundered into it and bricked his psp"

was a pre-emptive statement. I do see how it sounds now. Anyhow that isn't the case it is fully functional and I would like your advice if you are still willing?...

i was thinking you meant that, i kept reading it in my head thinking is he being sarcasted??? lol

right youre going to need a pandora battery and magic memory stick, to make these look at this thread:

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780

which is useless cause you dont have cfw.....

take 2:

youre going to need to buy a magic memory stick and pandora battery. if search around you can find them cheap.
however if your good with hardware you can hard mod you battery. this invloves opening up your battery and lifiting a pin. if you want to do it that way, which i strongly disadvise then google, "how to hard mod a slim psp battery"

you can make your magic memory stick using pandora deluxe. or you can buy one like i mentioned above

Can youj remember what fw it came with from the shop? If you bought it a year ago it might be a TA-088v3 motherboard which can only run the Chickhen and then a CFE.

If i was you.... Google CHickhenR2 and use that to run pspident (also google that) this will determine what motherboard it has, from there you either use ChickHenR2 and the CFE or you can use pandora to install a true CFW, as Alex-e has said.

I use GEN-D3 and it works fine, no worse than any M33 FW. Both are very good CFW's.

Hope this helps.

Also what version is the PSP you can check that on the botton part of it, where you see the barcode (PSP-1000, 2000 or 3000), it will easier to get an idea of what mobo he has this way.

He has already said it is a psp-slim which would be a 2000

You should make sure what PSP he has before giving the pandora option, because he might go and buy 1 having a 3k.

I'll peruse the helpfull getting started links kindly provided untill my son comes home tommorow with his psp.

One thing though, do I have to download chickenhenr2 for frimware version 6.20?

p.s
Thanks for the responses...

hi

right, before you go installing cfw ect its vital that you know what motherboard the psp has. Would help alot is if you rough a idea what firmware it had on it when it was new.

Was it less then 4.01? if so then continue with what i said with the pandora battery and magic memory stick.

if it was 4.01 or higher out off the box theres nothing that can be done for you now as its at 6.20

Hi alex_e

I've just read the links and I'm DL and saving the necessary SF and tools...i.e CFE/GEN-D3 CSW/MOBO Identifier tool...etc for when I see my son later today and hopefully It will be an early version.

Thank you...I'll post later on today with results...:thumbup1:

Just hit the unsubscribe from this thread in an email from alex_e instead of the forwarding to post link. Anyhow I'm just test posting to subscribe to it again....Ooops!!

Not in my experience the 3k is usually refered to as the the brite, the slim is the slim

It has 2C03 at the end of the bar code.

Hi all

Thanks for your time and input, it was most informative. Alas I won't be doing any modding on his unit after all. The boy seems to have lost interest now, and I haven't the time unfortunately. Once again thank you, it's been a pleasure to know you.

Happy gaming...:-P
