Developer Infinity Ward has revealed a campaign-based co-op mode for Modern Warfare 2 was originally planned, but was later dropped once discovering that it "ruined the experience" after extensive playtesting. That scrapped mode was later reborn as Spec Ops, a mission based co-op component comprised of levels that IW felt were more tailored towards cooperative rather than solo play.

Speaking to VG247, Infinity Ward community manager Rob Bowling explains:[blockquote2]We did it early on; that’s what Spec Ops started out as, as co-op through story.

But it really broke the cinematic experience, took the immersion out of it, out of the story and the pacing and everything we’d spent so long crafting. It just ruined the experience we were aiming for, so we took it out, kept the single-player for that one player intact and polished it.[/blockquote2]Bowling further mentioned that some of the experiences in Spec Ops mode have been taken straight out of single player, but polished for co-op play. Sounds like we'll be getting the best of both worlds.

Modern Warfare 2 is scheduled to hit November 10.

<p>Spec Ops is an incredibly fun game mode concept. Treyarch took a risk and implemented the Nazi Zombie game mode that struck gold for COD5: World at War, and single handedly rescued the game from failure (Propably not FAILURE, because anything with COD in the title will do moderately well, but Nazi Zombies MADE the game).</p>
<p>"Spec Ops" is InfinityWard's "Nazi Zombies", in the sense that the replay value will be incredibly high, and it's just a fun lil' game mode, especially when playing with a friend. (It obviously wont be the game highlight like Nazi Zombies was for COD5, MW2 is setting the bar for gaming right now, and every aspect of the game will be tremendously succesful.)</p>
<p>I strongly support their decision. From what I've seen, the campaign is meant to be experienced through one person, and your put through situations where if it was just you, and a friend, it wouldn't fit right and ruin the experience.</p>
<p>I CANT WAIT FOR MW2!!! I'm gonna grab a 6 pack of Redbull on the eve of November 9th, grab it at the midnight release, and play it all night Haha. Then hit my morning college classes the following day totally wired.</p>
