Word of PS3 titles imposing a mandatory installation process was newsworthy way back when, but now, these installs are so commonplace that almost everyone has come to expect them. Now, when a PS3 title doesn’t require an install, that’s news. Especially when said title is a major one.And if, like most of us, you loathe [...]

Seems like a needless compromise... I'm sure they had to scale something back to get this to work with out having ridiculous load times.

A 5 minute load at the begining of the game is better than 30-45 second loads spread out through the game... I don't think I understand the logic here.

Installs have gotten a bad rap on Sony's Machine since they were mandatory, but now, ever since the 360 added it, I do it even for rentals. And the 360 doesn't even need it, I just do it for the slight convienience it provides.

If they somehow found a way to pull this off with out compromising the scope of their game, then hats off, but I'm skeptical.

The original Uncharted didn't have any installs, if that gives a reference point.

Yeah this definitely isn't news.

I can't actually think of many games that were made specifically for the PS3 that need installs.

Things like Burnout Paradise which had PS3 as the lead platform didn't, and that had some of the fastest moving scenery I've seen. How they managed that with the slow bluray read speed only 256MB of memory is beyond me.

MGS4 is probably the biggest "made for PS3" game I know of that needed an install. I haven't actually played anything on PS3 for a while that's needed an install, Fallout 3 and Bioshock 2 were that last ones and they were made for 360/PC and then ported.

It's been a few years since I played Uncharted 1, but if I remember correctly, the load times weren't that bad. The first time you loaded a level, you had to wait a bit. After that, however, the game loaded while you played. I don't think you had to wait much, if at all.

The PlayStation 3 has 256 MB of XDR main memory and 256 MB of GDDR3 video memory for the RSX.

Still, it's impressive. :)

Yeah it's the 256MB of main memory I was referring too. Either it caches the entire map into 256MB really well or they found a way to get around the slow bluray read speed.

Well the E3 demo looked awesome, so if the whole game is like that and there's no installation that puts most PS3 games to shame for wasting my precious time.

I agree if Imfamous can pull it off with no loading times, I wish more games will follow this. I feel it a bit crazy that about 20 gb is taken up of my game installs alone. I have nothing but game installs and updates for about 19 ps3 games(1 psn game). Each game takes well over a 1 gb of space.
