Gaming Pachter: Handheld Market Reaching Saturation, PSP2 'Dead On Arrival'

Just some dood
Pachter says: "Handheld market is going to be Apple's, PSP2 will be "dead on arrival"

So Mr. "Borderlands-will-flop" Pachter gave us another piece of wisdom. This time he is saying that the 3DS will not sell as well as the DS, the PSP2 will be dead as soon as it comes out, and Apple and it's new iPod Touch is going to take over the market.

This is so wrong in so many ways... Let me try to count them:

1: Everyone has tried to take on Nintendo on the handheld market (Bandai, Sega, Atari and now Sony) and their fate as been the same. Failure. Nintendo might have to brush up and fight, but I'm sure they'll win.

2: Apple? Really? What about Google? Prediction say that the Android OS share could pass iOS by CES, and Android phone sales are on fire on the U.S. As an Android user I've seen gaming picking up pace on the Android, and after Google makes a overdue clean-up on piracy on the Market, Apple has a fight set.

3: PSP2 "dead"? Seriously? It will probably stuggle just like the PSP did, but if Sony makes the PSPhone have PSP2 support, it will be able to cater quite an audience I bet. Also, never discount first-party support on a Sony platform. That alone can move units.

Anyways, that's my take. Thoughts?

Seems right to me. People are turning to phones for portable gaming. They have a broader appeal. I personally would rather game on a 3DS than my Nexus One, but I'm certainly not in the majority.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter has climbed back up on his soap box again with some loaded commentary on the future and viability of the handheld market.

In a Gametrailers 'Pach Attack' segment, he labels the PSP2 as 'dead on arrival.' Further, he feels Apple's growing dominance with the iPod Touch will continue to gnaw at Nintendo's marketshare, pointing to lower software prices as a key momentum driver among budget-conscious parents.

I think Pachter fails to recognize those who do in fact enjoy and appreciate quality hand held gaming (place me into this category).

This in itself is a market that I don't believe will so readily hop into the gimmicky qualities that an Iphone/Ipod has to offer. In this sense, things may slow down somewhat because of those who do buy into this sort of thing, but I really don't think THE MAJORITY will flat out leave the PSP/DS behind. Gaming on an iphone will never replace a good, solid, and serious gaming platform - something which I believe a 100% touch device can never achieve. And I don't see apple straying from their touch-only devices any time soon.

I must say, Sony's new 'PSP2' which looks to be a solid phone + gaming device WITH BUTTONS, looks like one hell of an enticing buy for me.

I only knew about this guy a couple of weeks ago and I already think he's a massive cunt. I can't believe he gets paid to make these bullshit predictions.

I'm with Slasher. I mean, I don't think Pachter knows his quality games even if it hit him hard on the face. I like Tetris and all but why would I bother putting that unto my ever handheld gaming device (psp or ds) of which handles hardcore games. This parallelism is undeniable. I don't doubt the power of the iPhone but I don't think it could very well be dedicated to handle my God of War or my Zelda. I don't doubt that maybe the iPhone could handle this but you could probably see where Pachter falters in his analogy. No, kids don't just want to play Tetris but they want to play Monster Hunter on the PSP or what not on the DS.

iPod will kill the DS not the PSP2. I can see kids not caring whether they are playing with either one since its up to parents and they will choose iPod due to cost. PSP gamers buy one out of choice like buying a home console. Comparing the PSP to an iPod is like comparing an Atari to a PS3.
Obviously this conceited dude has never played a serious game in his life.

This guy is a total asshat. I think the NGP/PSP2 will do better way than the PSP. If not only because it has fucking 2 analogue sticks.
