Outselling the Gamecube isn't really something to celebrate over. It's decent, but they've lost alot of market share.

Didn't the Gamecube become a huge flop? I bought one when they first came out, then traded it in when there was a games draught. How many has X360 sold over its lifetime?

It's been doing better, though at a rate where if they continue at the same it's not going to catch up.

The 360 has been consistently outselling the PS3 by a good margin since the price cut. At the current rate, Sony will be far behind by this year's end. Though I'm expecting a PS3 price cut in the Summer or Fall, which should help boost sales.

360 - 28m units - 39 months = 717948 units / month
PS3 - 20m units - 27 months = 740740 units / month
Wow, with Sony selling an extra 23000 units/month....it will only take another 347 months to tie with the Xbox!

Woot...

Making just an analytical comparison based on release dates doesn't really tell the whole story. When the 360 was released, sure, there was hype about a "next-gen console" releasing. There was also a lot of talk and push back that the PS2 was not dead yet and people weren't going to make the leap. The 360 softened the beaches for the PS3 release, it's tough to deny that. The economy was different back then as well.

What you're looking at today from a pricing standpoint and from a frugal consumer potentially making a decision for their kid, is a much different situation. A situation where price may be the only deciding factor on if Little Johnny gets a 360 or a PS3 or a Wii. I can tell you right now, that if there is a parent who is worried about their job and is forced to make a decision between a $200 purchase and a $500 purchase, it's a no-brainer.

So yes, this is exciting news for the PS3 fans, because it gives them a new argument to make for their love of talking about console wars. At the end of the day, everyone needs to look away from the spreadsheet or chart before making all encompassing predictions and arguments.
